Neville Southall , MBE (born September 16, 1958 in Llandudno , Wales ) is a former Welsh football goalkeeper.

Player career

As a teenager he was denied a professional career with the Bolton Wanderers . He learned the trade of bricklayer and played in amateur teams.

In 1981 he began his professional career at Everton , for which he played 578 league games by 1997. With 92 internationals , he is the record national player in Wales . With Everton he won the English football championship in 1985 and 1987 , the English FA Cup in 1984 and 1995 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1984/85 . In the same year he was also voted Footballer of the Year in Great Britain . The goalkeeper , also known as “Big Nev” because of his size and stature, was particularly famous for his quick reflexes, which one would not trust such a tall and heavy man, and for his control of the penalty area.

After retiring from Everton in 1997, Southall played as a player-coach in Southend , Stoke , Torquay , Bradford and Shrewsbury . He is currently the coach of the Welsh U-19 national team. Because of his original nature and his media presence, Southall received the status of a "cult figure"; so exists z. B. a play called "Neville Southall's Washbag".
