England's Footballer of the Year
The title Footballer of the Year is awarded in England by two different organizations. English football journalists have been presenting the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year ( FWA Footballer of the Year ) award annually since 1948 . The members of the English professional footballers union PFA have been determining the title of PFA Players' Player of the Year since 1974, along with a choice of the best young professional (for players up to 23 years of age) as PFA Young Player of the Year . In addition, the PFA has been organizing an online vote every year since 2001 in order to give English football fans the opportunity to vote for their Player of the Year ( PFA Fans' Player of the Year ).
The named titles can be awarded to all players active in the Premier League - not only to English players. In fact, in the ten seasons between 1995 and 2004, for example, the journalists honored foreign footballers nine times. Thierry Henry is the only player to date to have won the award more than twice. Two German players were also chosen by the journalists: goalkeeper Bert Trautmann in 1956 and Jürgen Klinsmann, who was then known as “ Diver ”, in 1995.
Cristiano Ronaldo was not only the first Portuguese player to be named England's Footballer of the Year in 2007, but also the first player to win all four individual awards at once in Great Britain. The offensive all-rounder from Manchester United prevailed in the election of the English football journalists against his club colleagues at the time Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes . The then 22-year-old had previously been voted Player of the Year and Best Young Professional of the Season by his colleagues in the Premier League .
