Jermaine Anthony Jenas (born February 18, 1983 in Nottingham ) is a former English football player . The midfielder played for England between 2003 and 2009 .

Athletic career

Nottingham Forest (1999-2002)

Jenas went through the youth academy of Nottingham Forest and developed there early to one of the national best players in his age group. As a 17-year-old, Jenas, known for his above-average agility and accuracy of fit, made his debut in the third round of the FA Cup against Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2001 and shortly afterwards made his first appearance in the championship in a home game against Crystal Palace . In the further course of the season he did not play any more, but then became an important part of the team in the 2001/02 season and showed such good performances in the second division that he was one of the greatest talents in England in the professional world Football was viewed.

Newcastle United (2002-2005)

Thereupon the offers of the top English clubs increased and since Nottingham Forest was in great financial difficulties, Jenas moved before the end of the season in February 2002 for five million British pounds as the second most expensive teenager in British football to the club coached by Bobby Robson Newcastle United , with also lucrative offers from Manchester United and Leeds United . In Newcastle he made his debut in a 3-1 win against Southampton FC and was very similar to his team-mate Kieron Dyer in his agile play . Like Dyer, Jenas was then nominated by David Platt , who had also been a former coach of Nottingham Forest, for the U-21 national team and took part in the U-21 European Championship in Switzerland in May 2002 for this selection .

Jenas developed more and more into a regular player in his club and mostly demonstrated scoring danger from midfield. However, the so-called “box-to-box game”, as the midfield game between one's own and the opponent's penalty area is called, revealed itself to be his greatest strength.

After he had already run through all of England's other youth teams since the "U15", Jenas made his debut in February 2003 as a still active U21 youth player, for whom he was supposed to play a total of nine games, as a substitute against Australia in the senior team and was in Used for the first time in the game against Azerbaijan in October 2004 . Also in 2003, Jenas was named the best young professional by the PFA players' association .

In the 2003/04 season Jenas could not fully confirm the previously shown performances, but always remained in the extended circle of the national team. The following season was turbulent, in which Jenas initially regained good form and took over the position of vice-captain. When the regular team captain Alan Shearer had to take a break due to injury, Jenas even became the youngest captain in the club's history. The renewed relapse into a form weakness then heralded the end of his time in Newcastle surprisingly quickly.

When Jenas was only used very sporadically at the beginning of the 2005/06 season and compared life as a football player in Newcastle with a "life in a fishbowl", he moved on August 31, 2005 - the deadline for the transfer period - after disagreements with coach Graeme Souness an estimated eight million pounds to Tottenham Hotspur, with Arsenal FC also showing interest in Jenas.

Tottenham Hotspur (2005-2013)

In Tottenham he signed a five-year contract and found his way back to old strength with the new club. He contributed seven goals when Tottenham qualified for the UEFA Cup by finishing fifth in the championship . Although Jenas was increasingly struggling with injuries towards the end of the season, he was able to recover and was then nominated for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In the tournament itself, however, he was not used.

On August 29, 2007 he signed a new five-year contract with the "Spurs" and extended it for another year the following year. In 2008 he won his first team trophy with the league cup , also received further chances under the new English national coach Fabio Capello and scored his first international goal on February 6, 2008 against Switzerland (2-1).

On August 31, 2011, Tottenham Hotspur announced that Jenas would be loaned to Aston Villa for the 2011/12 season.

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season Jenas returned to his former club Nottingham Forest on loan until the end of the year .

Queens Park Rangers (2013-2014)

On January 31, 2013 Jenas moved within the league to the Queens Park Rangers . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2014.

He ended his career in January 2016.
