Glenn Hoddle (born October 27, 1957 in Hayes , Middlesex ) is an English football coach and former football player.

Athletic career

Hoddle began his football career in the youth team at Tottenham Hotspur . He made his league debut in 1975 at the age of 17 at Tottenham. The technically gifted Hoddle quickly developed into the game-defining figure in the game of the Spurs. In 1979 he became a national player and took part in the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy. In 1981 and 1982 he won the FA Cup and reached the second final round of the 1982 World Cup in Spain with the national team . In 1984 he won the UEFA Cup . At the Soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1986 , he was next to goal scorer Gary Lineker guarantor for the quarter-finals.

In 1987 he moved from Tottenham abroad to AS Monaco , where he ended his career in 1991. He ended his international playing career after the European Football Championship in Germany in 1988 . The transition from his active career to coaching he succeeded at Swindon Town from 1991 to 1993 as a player- coach . Then he was coach of Chelsea FC until 1996 . In England, after his great playing career and the subsequent coaching career, he experienced a similar recognition as in Germany Franz Beckenbauer and became national coach. He led the English national football team to the 1998 World Cup in France . There he was unlucky enough to be eliminated in the round of 16 on penalties against Argentina , but turned players like Michael Owen and David Beckham into new superstars at this tournament .

In 1999, negative remarks by Hoddle about disabled people led to a national scandal that ultimately led to Hoddle's dismissal from his position as national coach. After a brief break in his career, he returned to the coaching bench at Southampton FC in 2000 . However, when he got a coaching offer from his favorite club Tottenham Hotspur, he left Southampton that same year. At the Spurs he was dismissed in 2003 due to unsuccessfulness. From 2004 to 2006 he was a coach with Wolverhampton Wanderers .
