Gareth Southgate , OBE (born September 3, 1970 in Watford ) is a former English football player and current football coach . Mostly called up as a central defender , he played 57 international matches for England's senior team and took part in two European championships ( 1996 and 2000 ) and one world championship ( 1998 ) between 1996 and 2000 . From 1989, his club career spanned six years at Crystal Palace in London and Aston Villa in Birmingham, before he switched to coaching at his last club, Middlesbrough FC, after five years, where he gained his first experience between 2006 and 2009. Southgate's greatest sporting successes, remembered in many places because of his missed penalty in the semi-finals of the 1996 European Championship, were the two victories in the League Cup in 1996 and 2004 and in 2006 reaching the UEFA Cup final .

Southgate currently works as the coach of England's national soccer team.

Player career

Crystal Palace (1989-1995)

Southgate was trained in the youth teams of the South London club Crystal Palace and was an integral part of the reserve team in the late 1980s. Southgate found a personal supporter in Alan Smith, who had accompanied him early in his development as a coach. As an assistant coach of the first team, he suggested him to his "boss" Steve Coppell , who regularly promoted the talent to the regular formation in the first Premier League season in 1992/93 . Although the club was relegated to the second division in the summer of 1993, it became clear that an exceptional talent with leadership qualities was developing with the "eagles". Shortly after Southgate had completed 100 competitive games in the senior division, he took over the captaincy in November 1993 and under his direction as a second division champion succeeded in direct promotion straight away. At the beginning of his career he earned special recognition in professional circles and among his own supporters for his versatility. In addition to appearances as a full-back and in the center of defense, he filled almost every role in midfield and convinced with a self-confident charisma and playful elegance.

Back in the Premier League, Southgate was the undisputed leader of his team in the 1994/95 season and was not missing in any of the 42 league games. The tireless efforts during the total of 57 competitive games this season were not rewarded, however, and after an exciting relegation battle, 19th place (of 22 teams at that time) was just not enough for relegation. When Alan Smith, who took over as head coach after relegation in 1993, finally left Palace, Southgate also broke up in London and moved to Aston Villa for £ 2.5million . The supporters did not resent the identification figure, who later became the focus of the English national team, for this decision, and almost a decade later the fans in Selhurst Park greeted Southgate, who hosted Middlesbrough FC, with a standing ovation.

Aston Villa (1995-2001)

Southgate quickly made the desired career leap in Birmingham and in the 1995/96 season he was considered one of the greatest discoveries in the Premier League. As part of the three-man defensive line with Ugo Ehiogu and Paul McGrath , the two-footed newcomer was also responsible for opening the game and after an ankle injury at the beginning of March 1996, he returned to the team before the end of the month to win the league cup final against Leeds United 3-0 to win. After his participation in the 1996 European Championship in his own country, which ended "traumatically", in which he missed the sixth penalty in the semifinals against Germany and thus initiated the elimination in the face of a penalty still to be scored by Andreas Möller , Southgate convinced immediately again in the club with constant performance. In the 1996/97 season, in which he temporarily helped out in midfield and replaced Andy Townsend as captain after his failure, he missed ten games in a row due to injury, but he qualified again for the UEFA Cup in 1997, as well as a year later , when he was the new team captain after Townsend's departure to Middlesbrough FC and finally a key player in the defensive network of the "Villans".

Equipped with a new five-year contract in October 1998, Southgate led the team temporarily to the top of the table in the 1998/99 season, was often the "tower in battle" and after Ehiogu's injury-related loss at the side of the only 17-year-old Gareth Barry achieved a respectable sixth place in the end under such difficult conditions. Almost a year later, Aston Villa under Southgate's leadership returned to the FA Cup final for the first time in 43 years, losing 1-0 to Chelsea . In addition, he won the Premier League “ Player of the Month ” award in January 2000 ; He had previously suffered the rare accident against Leicester City (1: 3) in September 1999 , initially having caused an own goal and then being put out with a yellow-red card. The 2000/01 season was Southgate's last with Aston Villa . Even before the start of the European Championship in 2000 , he had officially asked for clearance for a change, but received a rejection from the then active coach John Gregory .

Middlesbrough FC (2001-2006)

The move to Middlesbrough FC in the summer of 2001 came as a surprise as this club was not one of the major English football clubs. The "Personnel Southgate" was the first commitment of the new coach Steve McClaren and it was not insignificant that he met Ugo Ehiogu in central defense , who had already joined "Boro" the year before. The newcomer quickly found his way around the new environment and the new “crowd favorite” in Riverside Stadium immediately won the club's “Player of the Year” award.

After Paul Ince had left the club, Southgate took over the captaincy for the 2002/03 season and in this role he took the first major trophy in the history of Middlesbrough FC with the League Cup at the Millennium Stadium in February 2004 . In the following season 2004/05 he managed with the seventh place the best placement in the Premier League, which also ensured the second participation in the UEFA Cup in a row. There he moved into the final as an active player in his senior year. In the final appearance of his career, however, he failed there on May 10, 2006 with 0: 4 at Sevilla FC .

English national team

On December 12, 1995, Southgate made his debut as England international and was substituted on in a game against Portugal . Then Terry Venables nominated him for the upcoming Euro 1996 in his own country, where he was an important player on the defensive and made it to the semi-finals with his team. His missed penalty kick against Andreas Köpke ensured that the hosts were eliminated from the tournament.

Two years later he was in the squad for the 1998 World Cup in France . There he was injured in the first group game against Tunisia (2-0) and only returned in the round of 16 against Argentina as a substitute for Graeme Le Saux , shortly after David Beckham was sent off. He was also used at Euro 2000 in the Netherlands and Belgium , but was missing from the England squad at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , although he was still the team in the penultimate international match before the World Cup finals (1-1 against South Korea ) had led as captain in the second half. A possible use at Euro 2004 in Portugal failed due to a knee injury Southgate sustained in the closing stages of the 2003/04 season. His 57th international match against Sweden (0: 1) on March 31, 2004 was his last.

Coaching career

After Steve McClaren's departure, club chairman Steve Gibson decided to offer Southgate the coaching successor at Middlesbrough FC in June 2006 . Although he did not have the necessary UEFA coaching license, the Premier League issued a permit, following the argument that Southgate had not had the time for the necessary coaching courses due to its longstanding obligations for the English national team and should be considered accordingly - the LMA coaching association saw this decision as critical. Southgate remained registered as a player in order to be able to "step in" in the event of an injury crisis in his club. After seven years, the Premier League had a real player-coach again .

In his first season in 2006/07 he reached a respectable 12th place in the final table with Middlesbrough FC. The first critical voices arose when the club could not break away from relegation places for a long time in the second season 2007/08. The secure relegation succeeded, however, and with the award for coach of the month August 2008, the crisis seemed to have been overcome. After an away win against his former club Aston Villa , Southgate's men ranked eighth in November 2008, before they were decisively thrown back by a series of 14 winless games until the end of February 2009. At the end of the 2008/09 season Boro rose to the second-rate Football League Championship . Southgate was initially still in office and after a 2-0 win over Derby County , his team finished fourth on October 20, 2009, before Gibson replaced him by Scottish old international Gordon Strachan .

On August 22, 2013, Southgate was named head coach of England's U-21 national team. At the end of September 2016, the FA appointed him as interim coach of the senior national team after Sam Allardyce was sacked after a short term in office due to an exposure scandal. Two months later, the FA introduced Southgate as the Three Lions' new head coach . After Southgate managed to lead the national team to the semi-finals at the 2018 World Cup , he was named British Coach of the Year in December 2018 .
