Andrew David "Andy" Townsend (born July 23, 1963 in Maidstone , Kent , England ) is a former Irish football player .
life and career
Townsend (a native of England) began his career with Welling United. After 105 appearances for the Wings, he moved to Weymouth FC in 1984 for £ 13,500. After a year in Weymouth , it went on to the first big club Southampton FC . The transfer fee was £ 35,000. He made his debut in the dress of the Saints on April 20, 1985 against Aston Villa, one of his later clubs. After the first season he broke his foot in a build-up game against his old club Weymouth FC. In 1988, a year after his comeback due to a broken foot, the Irishman moved to Norwich City . He made his debut for the canaries on September 3, 1988 against Tottenham Hotspur . During his time at Norwich City, he was called up for the first time on the Irish team . In 1990 he left Norwich and moved to Chelsea for a transfer fee of £ 1.2 million.
Three years later, its market value increased again when he moved to Aston Villa for the equivalent of around £ 2.1 million . With the Villans he won the English League Cup twice - in 1994 and 1996.
