Lee Stuart Sharpe (born May 27, 1971 in Halesowen , West Midlands ) is a former English football player. He played a total of 8 times for England .

Soccer career

Sharpe began his career at Torquay United . After just one season, the 16-year-old was discovered and signed by Manchester United in 1988 . He quickly gained a regular place on the left flank and was one of the most important pillars in winning the 1991 European Cup. In the same year he was called up to the national team for the first time, but did not manage to oust John Barnes and should not for a long time more to be called.

After an injury break - he suffered from meningitis - he was ousted from his position at Manchester United by the up-and-coming Ryan Giggs and had to move to other positions. Nevertheless, he made 265 appearances in 8 years and scored 36 goals.

In 1996 Leeds United signed him despite his vulnerability to injury and was even willing to pay £ 4.5million for him, which is a club record. After he had come to 26 missions for Leeds in 1996/97, a knee injury forced him to sit out completely the following season. In the summer of 1998 he was then awarded to Sampdoria Genoa , where he was unable to assert himself and therefore returned during the winter break.

In the spring of 1999 he was given to Bradford City . There he was the key player to return to the first division after the club's 77-year absence. After he was still a support in relegation in the following season, he lost his regular place in the 2000/01 season and was given to the lower class FC Portsmouth at Christmas . He returned in the summer, but his contract, which ran until 2002, was not extended.

He played briefly at Exeter City before he was hired by the Icelandic club UMF Grindavík in Grindavík . In June 2003 he announced his retirement from professional football and played briefly in the Kidderminster Sunday League before joining Garforth Town .

After football

Sharpe appeared in various celebrity and reality TV shows , for example in 2005 as a Sharpe shooter in the celebrity catch on ITV . He also works as an expert for the BBC , including on the Match of the day program . In the summer of 2006 he ran his own blog at yahoo.com on the occasion of the World Cup in Germany . In 2007 he took part in the second season of Dancing on Ice . On August 25, 2005, Sharpe published his autobiography in the UK under the title My Idea of Fun .
