The Bangor City Football Club ( wal .: Clwb Pêl Droed Dinas Bangor) is a football club from Bangor . The club was founded in 1876 as Bangor FC and plays in the Welsh Premier League , the top division in Welsh football.

history

Bangor City is one of the oldest Welsh football clubs. The club is a founding member of the North Wales Coast League (1893), the Welsh National League (1921), the North Wales Combination (1930), the Welsh League North (1935), the Northern Premier League (1968), the Alliance Premier League - now National League (1979) - and finally the League of Wales (1992).

In 1962, Bangor City won the Welsh Cup and qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . Bangor surprisingly won the first leg against SSC Napoli 2-0. Bangor lost the second leg in Naples with 1: 3. As the away goal rule was not yet applied, a third game was scheduled. At the Highbury in London , Naples won 2-1. The winning goal for Naples came only seven minutes before the final whistle.

1985 the second participation in the cup winners' competition followed. In the first round, the team met the Norwegian club Fredrikstad FK . In Norway they drew 1-1, while the game ended goalless in Bangor. Bangor reached the round of 16, in which the team lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid at home . After the 0-1 defeat in the second leg, Bangor was eliminated.

In 1994 Bangor won the League of Wales and qualified for the UEFA Cup . In the first round the opponent was ÍA Akranes from Iceland . Bangor was weakened by a UEFA regulation that only allowed three foreign players to play. Since most of the Bangor players were English, Bangor could not muster his strongest team. Both games were won by Akranes.

A year later, Bangor was able to defend his national title. In qualifying for the UEFA Cup, the team faced Polish representative Widzew Łódź , who won both games. In 1998 Bangor won the Welsh Cup for the first time since 1962 under coach Graeme Sharp . In the 1998/99 European Cup Winners' Cup , Bangor was eliminated against Haka Valkeakoski from Finland .

In January 2012 the club moved from the old Farrar Road Stadium to the new Nantporth Stadium (also called The Book People Stadium ).
