The small brush-tailed tree mouse ( Chiropodomys pusillus ) is a rodent in the subfamily of Old World mice (Murinae) that occurs on Borneo .

Taxonomy

The taxon Chiropodomys pusillus has long been a synonym of the Indomalayan brushtail tree mouse ( Chiropodomys gliroides ). Due to different body dimensions, such as short ears and short feet, the population was given the status of a species in 2005 by Guy G. Musser and Michael D. Carleton . Additionally, the lesser brushtail tree mouse is geographically separated from the other populations of the Indomalayan brushtail tree mouse. Genetic studies are necessary to confirm this taxonomic classification .

features

With a head-trunk length of 69 to 77 mm and a tail length of 81 to 96 mm, the species is smaller than Chiropodomys gliroides , but not the smallest member of the genus on Borneo. The hind feet are 16 to 17 mm long and the length of the ears is 11 to 13 mm. Weight information is missing. The short, soft and dense fur is light red-brown on top with dark areas on the head and on the center of the back. Furthermore, the outside of the arms and legs are darker. The species has gray wrists and ankles, and white fingers and toes. The big toe has a toenail , while the other toes have slightly curved claws . The well-haired tail is brown and long hair at the tip of the tail forms the eponymous brush. The Little Brush Tail Tree Mouse has a white underside from chin to anus .

The head is characterized by large eyes, small oval ears with a fine and almost invisible coat and long, narrow vibrissae . There are no dark areas that could be interpreted as a face mask.

Distribution and way of life

Specimens of the species have been registered widely across Borneo, which suggests that it is native to the whole island. In the vicinity of Mount Kinabalu , the small brush-tailed tree mouse reaches a height of 1,220 meters. It lives in pristine and modified forests, where it climbs trees. Typical trees of the region belong to the wing fruit family with a few beech family .

Further information on the way of life is not available. Perhaps the way the Indomalayan brushtail tree mouse specializes in bamboo .

Danger

Deforestation probably has a negative impact on the population. On the other hand, the number and size of protected areas has increased on Borneo since the 1970s. The IUCN lists the small brush-tailed tree mouse with insufficient data (data deficient) .
