The London Borough of Newham [ ˈnjuːəm ] is a borough of London . It is in the northeast of the city. When the Greater London administrative region was founded in 1965, it emerged from the County Borough of East Ham and the County Borough of West Ham , two independent cities in Essex . There were also parts of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich north of the Thames and the Municipal Borough of Barking west of the River Roding .

The population in 2011 was composed of 29.0% white, 43.5% Asian, 19.6% black and 1.3% Chinese. Along with Brent, Newham is one of two districts in which ethnic minorities make up the majority of the population.

The southern part of Newham is formed by the Docklands , the former port area, which is the largest urban development zone in London. London City Airport is also located there . Another development focus is Stratford in the west of the district. There you will find the Olympic Park with the most important sports facilities for the Olympic Summer Games 2012 , including the Olympic Stadium . The Premier League club West Ham United plays its home games in the Olympic Stadium. The twin city is Kaiserslautern .
