Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich
The Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich [ wʊlɪtʃ ] was a district in the metropolitan area of the British capital London with the status of a Metropolitan Borough . It existed from 1900 to 1965 and was in the east of the former County of London .
history
The district emerged from the civil parishes Woolwich , Plumstead and Eltham . These parishes were originally in the county of Kent and from 1855 belonged to the catchment area of the Metropolitan Board of Works . In 1889 they came to the new County of London, eleven years later they were combined into a Metropolitan Borough.
When Greater London was founded in 1965, the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich and most of Woolwich became the London Borough of Greenwich . The district of North Woolwich north of the Thames was separated and has been part of the London Borough of Newham ever since .
