The London City Airport ( IATA : LCY , ICAO : EGLC ) is an international airport in the Royal Docks in the London Borough of Newham . It was built on the site of the former King George V Dock near central London and the Canary Wharf business district and opened in 1987.

history

On December 2, 2005, the Docklands Light Railway to London City Airport opened.

In 2006 the American investment companies Global Infrastructure Partners and Oaktree Capital Management bought the airport for 750 million pounds.

The airport has been up for sale since mid-2015. Several companies showed interest, including Hong Kong- based Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings , Italian Atlantia , Australian Bank Macquaire, Gingko Tree, an arm of the state's foreign exchange reserve management arm, and another consortium. The owners expect a revenue of 2 billion pounds (the equivalent of 2.7 billion euros). The price is considered high: £ 2 billion is 44 times the airport's profit before taxes, depreciation and amortization . British Airways - the largest airline at the airport with a market share of around 40 percent - threatened to leave London City.

On February 27, 2016, a consortium made up of the three Canadian pension funds Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP), Borealis and AIMCo and the Kuwait State Fund bought the airport. The consortium paid two billion pounds for this.

The £ 344 million renovation of the airport was granted in July 2016 to double capacity. To mark the 30th anniversary of the airport in October 2017, drafts for the redesign were presented. The goals of the redesign are to reach the capacity of 8 million passengers per year. This is to be achieved through the addition of seven new parking spaces and the construction of a taxiway parallel to the current runway.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the sharp decline in air traffic and restrictions in travel, the airport was closed on March 25, 2020 until further notice.

Location and connection

The airport is located in the London Borough of Newham , about 10 km east of the City of London . It is the closest to the city center of all London airports .

London City Airport has a Docklands Light Railway station of the same name , which is located directly in front of the terminal building. Trains run every ten minutes (every eight minutes at rush hour) to Woolwich Arsenal in the east and via Canning Town to Bank in the west. The airport can also be reached by buses and taxis .

aims

The main destinations are European metropolises and British destinations such as Manchester , Scotland , Wales and the Isle of Man . In the German-speaking area, there are flights to Berlin , Frankfurt , Düsseldorf , Zurich , Geneva as well as Luxembourg and Munich . The airport is particularly useful for business travel due to its proximity to downtown London and Canary Wharf .

British Airways offers business class flights to New York . A refueling stop will be made at Shannon Airport on the outbound flight, as the Airbus A318 cannot take off from London City with a full tank. During the stopover, entry into the USA is handled by United States Customs and Border Protection , so that passengers can enter New York without any further formalities. The return flight is a non-stop flight. The flights will be operated using the former callsign of the Concorde flights, Speedbird 1 to Speedbird 4 .

Approved aircraft

The runway is relatively short at 1,508 meters in length. In addition, for noise protection reasons, only aircraft with an approach angle of at least 5.5 degrees are allowed to land. Helicopters and airplanes with only one engine are not permitted.

From the authorities' point of view, after the experience of September 11, 2001 , the use of larger aircraft would also increase the security risk for Canary Wharf . The following aircraft types are permitted:

Incidents

In the area of London City Airport there was a total loss of aircraft without fatalities from 1987 to 2016 :

  • On February 13, 2009, the nose landing gear of the Avro RJ100 G-BXAR of BA CityFlyer ( British Airways ) collapsed on landing. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair. Two of the 67 passengers and five crew members were slightly injured.

Passenger numbers

In 2018, 4.5 million passengers used London City Airport.
