Escalators to the platforms of the Jubilee Line

The station is above ground, but access is through an underground connecting hall with stairs, escalators and lifts up to all platforms and the bus station. To the west of the station building there are two central platforms, one on top of the other. The Jubilee Line of London Underground stops at the lower level platform, and the DLR (for trains in west-east direction) at the raised platform. On the east side is the former central platform of the North London Line , which is now used by DLR trains in a north-south direction.

history

The station was opened in 1846 by the Eastern Counties and Thames Junction Railway to open up the Thames ironworks and several docks . On June 21, 1898 a serious accident happened in the immediate vicinity when a large crowd wanted to watch the launch of the ship The Albion and a pedestrian bridge collapsed. William McGonagall described this calamity, which claimed 38 lives, in a poem.

In the mid-1990s, the station was completely rebuilt. From March 28, 1994 the trains of the Docklands Light Railway stopped here in the direction of Beckton , but the platforms were closed again between June 10, 1996 and March 5, 1998 to allow the construction of the Jubilee Line. The Jubilee Line opened on May 14, 1999.

Since December 2, 2005, a DLR route has been branching south of the station, leading to London City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal . On December 9, 2006, the Stratford - North Woolwich section of the North London Line was closed. Their platform was taken over by the Docklands Light Railway on August 31, 2011 after the section to Stratford had been rebuilt and the new line to Stratford International had been built.
