Silvertown is part of the London borough of Newham and lies on the north bank of the Thames .

This industrial district was named after Samuel Winkworth Silver's former rubber factory , which opened there in 1852. Nowadays it is dominated by about Tate & Lyle Sugars belonging to sugar refineries and John Knight ABP rendering plant .

The area has changed a lot since the 1970s. The Thames Barrier with the adjacent park was built, new residential areas were developed and London City Airport was opened.
