Tate & Lyle plc is an international British commercial enterprise listed on the FTSE 100 under the name TATE , which is primarily active in the production and marketing of foodstuffs . In addition to food, the company also manufactures food supplements and animal feed .
history
The company was founded in 1921 through the merger of two rival sugar refineries, Henry Tate & Sons and Abram Lyle & Sons.
Cooper and shipowner Abram Lyle learned about sugar refining in Greenock and then Plaistow in 1865 . Henry Tate (1819–1899) started his business in Liverpool in 1869 and later expanded to London . He used part of his profits as an industrialist to found the Tate Gallery in London in 1897 .
Both companies owned large refineries in Silvertown until they merged their businesses in 1921 under the name Tate & Lyle plc .
1985 Tate & Lyle acquired the bankrupt US competitor Great Western Sugar Company .
Business activity
The company was known in Great Britain for its sugar cane- refined sugar products, in particular for the “Lyle's Golden Syrup” brand. This brand is known for the symbol of a lion and a swarm of bees - alluding to a biblical story about Samson . In 1949 the company introduced the “Mr Cube” brand as part of a marketing campaign. Lyle's dark sugar cane syrup is called Black Treacle and has a very intense taste; it is required for numerous original English recipes. The sugar business and brand was sold to American Sugar Refining in July 2010 .
Tate & Lyle is the sole manufacturer of sucralose (trademark "Splenda"), a sugar substitute used by PepsiCo , General Mills , Unilever, and other manufacturers.
In connection with the public discussions and the recommendations of health organizations to reduce the consumption of sugar and sugary foods, Tate & Lyle is increasingly bringing products onto the market that have a low or reduced sugar content and therefore contain no sugar at all.
Tate & Lyle generates 80 percent of its sales in the United States of America .
