Apollonios (gem cutter, 3rd century BC)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apollonios ( ancient Greek Ἀπολλώνιος ) was a Greek gem cutter who worked in the 3rd century BC. Was active.

Two gems have been preserved from Apollonios, which were signed by him and can therefore be clearly assigned. One of the pieces is a garnet ring stone that shows a portrait of a man and dates back to around 220 BC. Is dated. It is believed that this is a representation of the young Athenian statesman Echedemos . The other is an amethyst ring stone depicting a standing Artemis .

The stone with the portrait is in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore , the one with Artemis in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples .
