Míchel (born March 23, 1963 in Madrid ; real name José Miguel González Martín del Campo ) is a former Spanish football player and today's coach .

Career as a football player

The right winger began his football career in Real Madrid's youth division . As part of the legendary Quinta del Buitre (an outstanding talent year with players like Emilio Butragueño , Rafael Martín Vázquez , Manolo Sanchís , Miguel Pardeza and Míchel himself) he made the leap into the first squad in 1984 after great successes with the second team Castilla . There he wore the number 8 on his back until his last game of the Madridistas. For many years he became a fixed star on the right wing , both at Real Madrid and in the Spanish national team , where he caused danger with his notorious flanks. A serious knee injury in the 1994/95 season and the associated loss of the regular position led to his departure in 1996 after a total of 20 years at the club. After a season at the (now disappeared) Mexican first division club Atlético Celaya , where he was at the side of his former Having played Madrid colleague Emilio Butragueño, Míchel ended his career as a footballer.

statistics

Between 1982 and 1996 he played for Real Madrid in 404 top division games and scored 96 goals, in addition he scored nine goals in 53 cup games and 20 goals in 89 European cups for Los Blancos . In 66 international matches (including the 1986 World Cup , 1988 European Championship and 1990 World Cup ) he scored 21 goals.

Career as a coach

After his active career, he worked for several years in the Spanish media landscape as a football expert and commentator before taking over the coaching position of Rayo Vallecano in the 2005/06 season . With the small club from Madrid, he just missed the promotion playoff in Segunda División B. On July 5, 2006, he moved, under the newly elected President Ramón Calderón , back to his former club Real Madrid , where he coached the second team Real Madrid Castilla for a year . On December 3, 2008, he left the club because of differences with club president Ramón Calderón, although Real Madrid Castilla was at the top of the Segunda División B table at that time. In April 2009 he was signed by Getafe FC as a coach. At the end of the 2010/11 season , he was released from his duties, as the team ranked just above the relegation places in the table. In February 2012 he succeeded Marcelino García Toral at Sevilla FC , but was fired in January 2013 after the team's numerous failures. On February 4, 2013 he was introduced as the new coach of Olympiacos Piraeus . He signed until the summer of 2015. Míchel was Greek champion and Greek cup winner in the 2012/13 season . On January 6, 2015 Míchel and Olympiacos announced the early termination of their contract. Despite qualifying for the Europa League and a second place in the Greek championship, one point behind the leader of the table, the red and white team could not completely convince in terms of play. The coach was also said to have a bad relationship with some players. Míchel was twice Greek champion and won the Greek cup once. He made it to the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League with Olympiacos . In addition, the red and white celebrated with Míchel respectable victories against Manchester United , Juventus Turin and Atlético Madrid .

On March 7, 2017, Míchel succeeded Marcelo Romero as head coach at the Spanish first division club FC Málaga . After only three wins from 19 games, he was released on January 13, 2018.
