José Augusto Torres (born September 8, 1938 in Torres Novas , † September 3, 2010 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese football player and coach . As a player, he was part of the heyday of SL Benfica at the beginning of the 1960s and won the European championship twice with the club, along with numerous other titles . With the national team , he was third at the 1966 World Cup in England. As a coach, he led Portugal to participate in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Career as a player

José Augusto Torres began his career with the provincial club Torres Novas before moving to Benfica Lisbon in 1959 at the age of 21 . A team was formed there in the late 1950s that would later achieve great success in Europe. The first success with Benfica was winning the national championship in the 1959/60 season with two points ahead of local rivals Sporting . Winning the championship meant for Benfica participation in the European Cup in the 1960/61 season . There Benfica reached the final after victories over Heart of Midlothian , Újpest Budapest , Aarhus GF and SK Rapid Vienna , in which the opponent was FC Barcelona . Barça were defeated 3-2 for Barcelona with goals from José Águas , Mário Coluna and an own goal by Antoni Ramallets, as well as goals from Zoltán Czibor and Sándor Kocsis .

Torres did not score any goals in the 1960/61 season of the European Cup, but he was often not in the Portuguese squad. In the following season , Benfica was able to repeat their triumph in the European Cup after they were again Portuguese champions. After FK Austria Wien , 1. FC Nürnberg and Tottenham Hotspur were defeated, they were again in the final, where the opponent was Real Madrid this time . Benfica won 5-3 in the end. But then the successful time in the European Cup for Benfica was over. In the championship, however, the team from the capital of Portugal secured many more titles. José Augusto Torres scored 226 goals in 259 games during his time at the top Portuguese club.

José Augusto Torres played a total of 34 times for the Portuguese national football team . With this he also took part in the 1966 World Cup in England. There the Portuguese reached the semi-finals, where they failed at the eventual world champions England. In the game for third place, the Soviet Union was defeated. Torres scored his third tournament goal. The striker, who is 2.04 meters tall, had previously scored against Hungary and Bulgaria in the preliminary round . His last game in Portugal's selection was a 2-2 in qualifying for the World Cup for Germany in 1974 against Bulgaria.

After the active career

After his active career, José Augusto Torres was active as a coach. In addition to Vitória Setúbal and Boavisto Porto, he also coached the Portuguese national team. With the national team, he managed to qualify for a World Cup in 1986 for the first time since 1966. In Mexico, however, Portugal were eliminated in the preliminary round after beating England and losing to Poland and Morocco .

Torres died on the morning of September 3, 2010 after a long illness.
