Simão Pedro Fonseca Sabrosa [ siˈmɐ̃u ] (born October 31, 1979 in Constantim ) is a former Portuguese football player .

Career

In the club

Sporting Lisbon

Simão comes from the talent factory of Sporting Clube de Portugal, which has produced many top players such as Luís Figo , Cristiano Ronaldo , Nani , Ricardo Quaresma and many more. He started his professional career with Sporting Lisbon in 1997 . Simão Sabrosa scored his first goal a minute after coming on in his first appearance with the professionals at the age of 17.

FC Barcelona

For the 1999/2000 season he moved to the Catalans for a transfer fee of 15 million euros . In his first season at Barça , Simão reached the Spanish runner-up and the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League with the team . At FC Barcelona Simão couldn't really convince in two seasons, he only managed three goals in 46 league games.

Benfica Lisbon

Then Simão returned to Lisbon for the 2001/02 season to SL Benfica for a € 12 million transfer fee. In the 2004/05 season he won the first championship with his club in eleven years, Simão was in all games on the field and scored a total of 15 goals. In six years at Benfica Lisbon he made a total of 172 league games and 76 goals.

Atlético Madrid

In July 2007 Simão moved to Atlético Madrid for 20 million euros . There he received a contract until 2012. Simão made his debut for Atlético in the derby against Real Madrid (August 25, 2007), his first goal he scored on Matchday 4 (September 23, 2007) against Racing Santander .

2010 was his most successful year of his football career. Simão won the UEFA Europa League and Supercup with the red and whites, and they also reached the final of the Copa del Rey . In addition, he was honored as the best Portuguese player abroad.

Beşiktaş Istanbul

During the winter break of the 2010/11 season , he moved to the Bosporus for € 900,000 to the Turkish first division club Beşiktaş JK , where he also met his compatriots Manuel Fernandes , Ricardo Quaresma and Hugo Almeida . Simão signed a two and a half year contract and will collect around 7.2 million euros in salary during that time. On May 11, 2011 in the Turkish Cup final , he scored the decisive penalty kick for his team in the penalty shoot-out and helped them win the cup.

Espanyol Barcelona

In August 2012, Simão moved to Barcelona again for the 2012/13 season , but this time to Espanyol Barcelona. He left the club after the 2013/14 season.

NorthEast United FC

After taking a year off, he joined Indian first division club NorthEast United FC on July 1, 2015 . Here Simão scored three goals in 10 league games. After the end of the season, he ended his active career.

In the national team

With the national team, in which Simão made his debut on November 18, 1998, he was runner- up at the 2004 European Championships in his own country and took part in the 2006 World Cup, where he was fourth with Portugal. At the EM 2008 they reached the quarter-finals, where Germany lost 3-2. At the 2010 World Cup , they reached the round of 16, where they were eliminated by Spain . In the same game, Simão went off after 72 minutes and was replaced by Liédson . The knockout round defeat was also his last international match. Two months after the World Cup, he surprisingly ended his career in the Portuguese national team for personal reasons.

Style of play

The 1.70 m tall dribbling former captain of Benfica Lisbon prefers to play as a playmaker behind two points, but is mostly used as a left or right winger in the Portuguese national team . His strengths include free kicks, dribbling as well as his ball handling and technique.
