Manuel Henrique Tavares Fernandes (born  February 5, 1986 in Lisbon ), called Manuel Fernandes , is a Portuguese football player with Cape Verdean roots.

Manuel Fernandes is a defensive midfielder .

Career

society

Fernandes grew up in the Lisbon suburb of Amadora , where he regularly played street football with his friend Nani . In 2002 he was accepted into the youth team of Benfica Lisbon . His debut with Benfica he made in 2003/04 in the Portuguese Primeira Liga . With his good performance in defensive midfield, he quickly impressed the then coach, José Antonio Camacho , and the fans. His goal against Gil Vicente made him the second youngest scorer for Benfica ever. He became a regular player - often alongside Petit - in the 2004/05 season . Under the direction of Giovanni Trapattoni he helped the team to win the title again for the first time in 2005 after a lean period of 11 years. Fernandes missed just five league games during this season and made seven appearances in Europe, where Benfica failed in the second round of the UEFA Cup .

During the 2005/06 season he had to undergo an operation due to an inguinal hernia . This season he played with Benfica in the Champions League , where he scored a goal against Villarreal . In the quarter-finals he was against the eventual winners FC Barcelona and in the league he was runner-up with Benfica.

In the summer of 2006, a move to Portsmouth FC failed because he failed the medical check due to his groin problems. The two clubs initially agreed on a loan deal for half a year. Fernandes scored in his first game for his new club in the League Cup against Mansfield Town . Later he only came to sporadic missions because he couldn't get past Sean Davis and Pedro Mendes . Harry Redknapp , the coach at the time, later revealed that, due to a clause in the contract, Portsmouth would have had to sign the player for € 18m for more than 12 appearances. Since they didn't want that, the loan business was ended in winter 2007.

Fernandes was immediately loaned out again this time to Everton , and he also signed a longer contract with Benfica. He played his first game at Goodison Park against the Blackburn Rovers . Overall, he scored twice in 9 games, including against Manchester United . He then returned to Benfica as Everton only wanted to pay 9 million euros instead of the 18 required. Then there were legal difficulties with the transfer to Everton, actually the deal was already fixed. Everton secured half the rights to Fernandes and Benfica the other. The Premier League did not allow this deal, however, as Everton would not fully own the player. Everton were angry when other players like Carlos Tévez or Javier Mascherano were allowed to switch under the circumstances. So he finally moved to Valencia CF for 18 million euros and received a contract there until 2013.

He made his debut as a substitute in the game against UD Almería , playing a total of 7 league games for Valencia this season . In January 2008 Fernandes went on loan again to Everton , who also had a purchase option, but did not pull it. For the 2008-09 season, Valencia's new coach Unai Emery announced that he would include Fernandes in his plans. His first goal for Valencia was against Real Valladolid on October 5th . This season Fernandes was used regularly and completed a total of 27 league games, 20 of them from the start. In the following season he played only six league games over the full season. In the winter transfer period of the 2010/2011 season, he was loaned to the Turkish club Beşiktaş Istanbul with a purchase option until the end of the season . Besiktas took up the purchase option and signed the midfielder. In the summer of 2014 he left the Istanbul team.

National team

In June 2007 he took part in the U21 European Championship 2007 with Portugal's U-21s , where he played all games. He also took part in the U-21 European Championship 2006 and the qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2009 . He made his senior team debut in 2004 against the Irish national football team . He scored his first international goal in a friendly against Canada .

Others

He is the cousin of Gelson Fernandes , who plays for Eintracht Frankfurt .

Fernandes was arrested in January 2008 after engaging in a police fight.
