Gelson da Conceição Tavares Fernandes (born September 2, 1986 in Praia , Cape Verde ) is a former Swiss football player of Cape Verdean descent. The defensive midfielder played professional football across Europe during his career. Most recently, he was active at Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt , with whom he won the DFB Cup in May 2018 . From 2007 to 2018 Fernandes also played 67 times for the Swiss senior team , with which he took part in two European and two world championships.

Beginnings at FC Sion

In 1991, when he was five years old, Fernandes moved with his mother from the capital of the Cape Verde Islands to Sion , Switzerland, because his father had found work there. He started playing football at FC Sion and went through all youth departments. From 2004 to 2007 he was a member of the club's professional squad. From 2004 to 2006 he played 65 second division games , in 2006/07 - due to promotion - 34 first division games . He made his first division debut on July 19, 2006 (1st matchday) in a goalless draw in the away game against Grasshopper Club Zurich , his only first division goal was on October 14, 2006 (11th matchday) with the goal to make it 1-1 in the 90th minute in the away game against FC Luzern .

Manchester City and Saint-Etienne

For the 2007/08 season Fernandes moved to the English first division club Manchester City . The transfer fee of 9.1 million francs was the second highest ever paid by a foreign club for a Swiss player. After he only came to a few occasional assignments in 2007/08 , Fernandes was able to earn a regular place in Manchester and mostly played alongside the veteran Dietmar Hamann .

For the 2009/10 season Fernandes moved to the French first division club AS Saint-Étienne , for which he played 33 league games.

Loan players in Verona, Leicester and Udine

For the 2010/11 season Fernandes moved - on loan - to the Italian first division club Chievo Verona and scored two goals in 29 missions. On September 12, 2010 (2nd matchday) he made his debut in a 3-1 win in the away game against CFC Genoa ; he scored his first league goal on September 22, 2010 (4th matchday) in a 3-1 win in the away game against SSC Napoli with the goal to make it 2-1 in the 58th minute.

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he moved - again on loan - to the English second division club Leicester City . His only league goal in 15 league appearances was on August 20, 2011 (11th matchday) in a 2-2 draw in the away game against Nottingham Forest with the goal to make it 2-0 in the 21st minute.

During the winter break, another loan agreement followed with the Italian first division club Udinese Calcio , who left the purchase option unused at the end of the season.

Sporting Lisbon and FC Sion

During the summer break of 2012, the contract between Saint-Étienne and Fernandes, which was valid until 2013, was terminated. Fernandes then signed a four-year contract with the Portuguese first division club Sporting Lisbon ; but only played six league games. In December 2012 it was announced that he would be returning to FC Sion on loan for a year and a half .

Bundesliga and three years in Rennes

For the 2013/14 season he moved to the Bundesliga club SC Freiburg . For this he completed 38 games and scored one goal. He was used in 30 games in the Bundesliga, 5 games in the Europa League and 3 games in the DFB Cup .

After a season at SC Freiburg , Fernandes moved to Ligue 1 at Stade Rennes in August 2014 .

Return to the Bundesliga

For the 2017/18 season Fernandes moved to the Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt , with whom he signed a two-year contract. In May 2018, the Swiss won the DFB Cup with the team after beating FC Bayern Munich 3-1 in the final . In December of the same year, his contract was extended to June 2020. In the 2018/19 season he made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League with Eintracht and failed with his team there in a penalty shoot-out at Chelsea ; Fernandes was used nine times in the competition. The Swiss played a total of 81 competitive games for the Frankfurt team. Fernandes ended his active career at the end of the 2019/20 Bundesliga season .

National team

Fernandes played a total of 25 times for various Swiss junior national teams. He was the captain of the Swiss U-21 national team .

On August 22, 2007 he made his debut for the senior team in a friendly against the Netherlands . Since then he has been part of the team. In the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland, he was the first time at a major tournament in the squad of Switzerland , but not make it past the group stage with his team. In Switzerland's first group game during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he scored the 1-0 winning goal against Spain , making it the first ever victory against a Spanish senior team; Switzerland nevertheless had to be content with third place in the group and dropped out of the tournament early. At the 2016 European Championships in France , he was included in the Swiss squad. In two of the three group games he was a substitute in the last quarter of an hour. Also in the round of 16 against Poland he was taken into the game a quarter of an hour before the end of regular time when they were 0-1 down. It came to an equalization and to overtime and finally to the penalty shoot-out, which the Swiss team lost and eliminated. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he was part of the Swiss squad . He was not used and was eliminated with the team in the round of 16. On August 7, 2018, he announced his retirement from the national team after 67 games with two goals.
