Fernandes has Portuguese and Cape Verdean roots. His cousin is former professional footballer Gelson Fernandes .
Career
societies
Fernandes started his career at FC Fully in 2004 and moved to the youth department of FC Sion in 2007 . There he moved up to the club's second team for the 2012/13 season and was used for them in the third-rate Promotion League . On June 1, 2013, he made his debut for the first team in the Super League in a 4-2 home win against FC Zurich . From the 2014/15 season Fernandes was a permanent member of the first team. On June 7, 2015, he won the Swiss Cup with the club after a 3-0 final win against FC Basel and qualified for the Europa League 2015/16 . There he was eliminated with the team in the sixteenth finals.
For the 2016/17 season Fernandes moved to the English first division side West Ham United , with whom he signed a four-year contract. The season 2018/19 played Fernandes on loan at the Fiorentina in the Serie A .
He has been playing for the German Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 since the 2019/20 season . His contract runs until 2023.
National team
Fernandes made his debut on March 26, 2016 in a 1-1 draw against England in the Swiss U-21 national team . He scored his first goal in his second appearance on September 2, 2016 against Kazakhstan to make it 3-0. In total, he played six times for the U-21s.
On November 13, 2016, he played for the senior national team for the first time in a 2-0 win in the World Cup qualifying home game for the 2018 World Cup against the Faroe Islands .
