Karim Onisiwo (born March 17, 1992 in Vienna ) is an Austrian football player on the position of a striker and winger . He is under contract with the German Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 and is an Austrian national player .

Club career

Childhood, youth and first appearances in men's football

Karim Onisiwo was born on March 17, 1992 as the son of a Nigerian and a Viennese woman in Vienna , where he grew up mainly in the Favoriten district . Before he was born, his father and David Alaba's father , George Alaba , who had both lived in the same district of Lagos , were known to each other. Even when both came to Vienna and their two sons were born, contact was maintained, which is why Onisiwo spent a large part of his childhood and youth as a cage footballer alongside David Alaba and other young players. Around three months after his sixth birthday, Onisiwo, after being discovered by a football coach playing in the park, was registered by his parents with the Favoritner AC , where he went through various youth division until October 2001, before joining the youth team of SK Rapid Vienna connected. From there it went in March 2002 to the junior division of local rivals FK Austria Wien , where he was registered until September 2005 and in between from September 2004 to March 2005 belonged to the youth team of 1. Simmeringer SC . From Austria he switched to the junior division of SC Team Wiener Linien and, after almost two years, at the age of 15, joined Austria's oldest football club, First Vienna FC 1894 . In the Döblingern Onisiwo appeared dangerous from the start, so at the age of 15 he was still one of the most dangerous players in the club's U-17 team, with whom he was superior champion at the end of the 2007/08 season. He also made too few appearances for the club's U-19 selection, with which he was runner-up behind the Vienna Sports Club and was also successful as a goal scorer.

From the 2008/09 season, he again demonstrated his attacking strength, scoring at least 14 goals in 13 U-17 games and was again U-17 champions with the team. He was also increasingly used in the U-19 team, for which he scored eight goals in at least 15 championship games. Although he did not make any appearances for the second combat team with play in the fifth-class Oberliga B , he was in the squad of the regional league team for the first time in 2008/09 , which was champion at the end of the season and was promoted to the second highest football league in the country . While he was not taken into account in the official league events, he completed a game in the Lower Austria Cup under coach Peter Stöger when he came on as a substitute for Alfred Niefergall at halftime in the 4-6 defeat against SV Hirschstetten on October 8, 2008 . In another test match against SV Würmla , he was once unused on the substitute bench of the first team this year. In the following season 2009/10, the trained striker was mainly used in the league team, for which he stood in 20 league games on the field, where he scored one goal. With the team he ranked fourth in the final ranking, but also made a few appearances for the club's U-18 team, which was runner -up one point behind the FC Stadlau U-18s . It wasn't enough for professional matches, neither competitive nor friendly matches this season, although he had already signed a professional contract at the age of 17.

Rapid breakthrough in men's football

In mid-September 2010, Onisiwo, who trained as a car mechanic after graduating from school , moved on loan to the then regional league team SC Ostbahn XI , where he quickly made his breakthrough. In the first game, a 0-1 away defeat against the SK Rapid Wien amateur team , the striker was used by Kurt Jusits for the full 90 minutes. Only a week later he scored his first goal for the Simmeringer in a 1-1 home game against SV Schwechat . Subsequently, Onisiwo became the top scorer of his team and at the end of the season ranked second on the team's internal scorers list, ahead of players such as Rareş-Sergiu Chiorean (six goals) or Aleksandar Marinković and Markus Rühmkorf with five goals each. In the end, only four wins and five draws from 30 completed games were not enough for relegation in the Regionalliga Ost, which sealed their relegation to the Vienna City League . After returning to his regular club in June 2011, the versatile player was immediately handed over to TSV Neumarkt , a participant in the third-class Regionalliga West, at the beginning of July 2011 . In the Salzburg team he scored a hat trick in the first round of the championship in a 4-1 home win over FC Hard . At the amateur club from Wallersee he was at the end of the season behind Christoph Hübl (16 goals) and together with Daniel Kreuzer with eight goals in the team's internal goalscorer list, although he only belonged to the team until the winter break and had only played 16 league games. Furthermore, he completed the first round match of the ÖFB Cup 2011/12 against SC Weiz , to which the team lost 1: 5, for the team that finished 13th of 16 places in the Regionalliga West at the end of the season .

Via Straßwalchen to Austria Salzburg

In the winter transfer window of the 2011/12 season, Onisiwo moved within the state of Salzburg to the Salzburg regional league club SV Straßwalchen , where he was offensively strong after he was not used in the first three league games in the spring. So he was used from the 20th round in every league game and had seven hits and just as many assists in eleven appearances. With the team, he ranked eighth place exactly in the middle of the table and then changed clubs again in the summer before the 2012/13 season . After a trial session under coach Adi Hütter at SV Grödig , where he had already completed a trial session a year earlier under Heimo Pfeifenberger , this time at the beginning of July 2012 the up-and-coming SV Austria Salzburg , where he was not used in the first three games due to injury and then mainly acted as a substitute for the more experienced Raimund Friedl on the right wing. It was not until October 13, 2012 that he was used as a center forward in a 2-0 win over SC Bregenz by coach Thomas Hofer and held this position, alternating with that of the right winger and sporadic other positions, until the end of the season. Especially after the system was changed, he ousted Friedl from his traditional position in October and then went on to play more often over the full length of the game. At the end of the championship, Austria was six points behind FC Liefering in second place in the table and had not made it up. Instead, the team prevailed again in the Salzburg Football Cup and defeated TSV St. Johann in the final 4-0. By the end of the season, Onisiwo had a record of six goals and five assists in 25 league games. In the first round match of the ÖFB Cup 2012/13, the team was defeated by the eventual cup winner FC Pasching 1: 2 and retired early.

After Onisiwo had extended his contract with Austria for another season in June 2013, he completed a successful season in which he was used under Miroslav Polak in all 30 league games. He was alternately on the right and left wing, but also played a few games as a striker. The then 21- and 22-year-olds, who played mainly as a substitute or joker in the first third of the season, especially from the 20th round, when he scored nine goals in the last eleven league games and another eight for prepared his teammates. Over the entire season he had a record of twelve goals and eleven assists in 30 championship games. With the team he was after only one defeat and nine points ahead of the WSG Swarovski Wattens master of the Regional League West, but different in the subsequent relegation with 2: 5 against the still as a fusion with the dissolved PSV Team für Wien occurring Floridsdorfer AC as FAC Team for Vienna and had to stay in third class. In addition, Onisiwo repeatedly won the Salzburg soccer cup and retired with the team in the second round of the 2013/14 ÖFB Cup on penalties against his future club SV Mattersburg from the current tournament.

Change to Mattersburg and call up for the national team

Due to his performances in the regional league, Onisiwo was quickly courted by Austrian and European clubs. Among them, the Bundesliga clubs SK Sturm Graz , SV Grödig, SCR Altach and the two major Viennese clubs showed interest in the now 22-year-old. He moved to the second-class first division and signed a contract with SV Mattersburg together with teammate Michael Perlak . His contract ran for a year including an option to extend. With the Mattersburg team , under coach Ivica Vastić, he quickly became a strong attacking and goal- scoring regular player who was even more courted by other clubs. SK Rapid Wien tried hard to get Onisiwo involved before Mattersburg chairman Martin Pucher issued a transfer ban. Under Vastić he was used alternately in the left midfield or as a center forward. He played in 33 of 36 league games, scored 18 goals and prepared another ten for his teammates. With his 18 goals, he was behind Markus Pink not only the team's second-best goalscorer, but the entire league. Furthermore, he was one of the best assistants in the league and led the scorer list with 28 points. A few laps before the end of the season, Mattersburg fixed promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga and in the end had a six-point lead over FC Liefering, who would not have been eligible for promotion as a Red Bull Salzburg farm team anyway. In the ÖFB Cup 2014/15 , Onisiwo and his team were eliminated in the round of 16 against Altach on penalties.

After the promotion, SV Mattersburg took advantage of the option and extended Onisivo's contract until the summer of 2016. Two weeks before the summer transfer window was closed, there were disagreements in Onisiwo's contract with the Mattersburgers; His remuneration had not been increased after the contract was extended and Senate 2 of the Bundesliga was called in as an arbitration board. At this time, Onisiwo was also observed by other clubs. In the Bundesliga he was then mainly used as a left winger and was only used briefly as a striker at the beginning of the season. After he had made 14 Bundesliga appearances, two goals and six assists as well as three appearances and one goal in the 2015/16 ÖFB Cup , he was called up for the first time by team boss Marcel Koller for the Austrian national team , where he was Should compensate for the failure of the injured Martin Harnik . In October 2015, two German clubs , RB Leipzig and 1. FC Nürnberg, announced their interest in Onisiwos. At the same time, Andreas Herzog announced that his father Anton Herzog, who works as a scout at Rapid, had long wanted Onisiwo to join the major Vienna club.

Change to 1. FSV Mainz 05

On January 5, 2016, Onisiwo signed a contract with the German Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05, initially dated until summer 2019 . Just one day earlier, the Vienna Labor and Social Court declared a contract extension unilaterally carried out by SV Mattersburg in the summer of 2015 to be invalid. Although the judgment was not yet final, Mainz 05 announced the change a day later. It then took another month before the Mainz team received approval for Onisiwo. In the meantime, FIFA has also been involved in order to obtain at least a provisional eligibility for the 23-year-old. After FIFA had decided on February 5, 2016 that Onisiwo was eligible to play, he was unable to play the first games after approval due to a toe injury. In the Bundesliga he made his debut on the 26th matchday in the 2-0 away defeat against Borussia Dortmund , when he came on for Christian Clemens in the 62nd minute of the game . On matchday 33 he scored his first goal for Mainz 05 in a 3-1 away win against VfB Stuttgart and prepared a goal for his teammate Yunus Malli in the same game . In total, he made nine league appearances in Germany's top soccer league in the 2015/16 season and was sixth with the team at the end of the season.

In the course of the next season, Onisiwos offensive positions varied, and also his playing times. Since the Mainz team had qualified for the group stage of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League due to their position in the table in the previous season , Onisiwo was also used in this. He completed three of six possible group games and was eliminated from the current tournament as third in Group C. In the DFB Cup, the team came to an end in Round 2 against SpVgg Greuther Fürth . Due to bone edema, he fell out for more parts of spring 2017 and then had to catch up on his training deficit. For this reason, he also belonged to the Mainz team for a few weeks before he was able to recommend himself to the professional team again. Almost four months after his last first division appearance, Onisiwo returned to the professional squad as a substitute and played three more Bundesliga games in the last six championship rounds. At the end of the season he brought the Rheinhessen to 15th place in the table, tied with 16th VfL Wolfsburg , but with a better goal difference.

Under the previous amateur coach Sandro Schwarz , who was promoted to coach of the professional team before the start of the 2017/18 season , the still ailing Onisiwo hardly found a place in the team. He was out for a few months again due to a shoulder injury with subsequent surgery and was only able to start team training again during the winter break. Due to his training deficit, it took a few weeks before Onisiwo was allowed to sit on the bench again in the 22nd championship round. For the most part he only came on short assignments until the end of the season. As in the previous season, the Mainz team were involved in the relegation battle until the end of the 2017/18 season and ended the season in 14th place in the table. In the DFB-Pokal 2017/18 , Onisiwo, who had made two appearances, ended in the quarter-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt .

In the following season 2018/19 , the Austrian developed into a player who played a prominent role. Except for a few minor injuries, such as a concussion , Onisiwo remained consistently healthy, but was initially sent to the field as a substitute for a few minutes, in addition to a few longer assignments. By spring 2019 at the latest, he was regularly in the starting line-up and had scored seven goals in 26 league games at the end of the season. In the DFB Cup 2018/19 , he and his team were eliminated in the second round against FC Augsburg .

His contract in Mainz runs until 2022.

National team career

Substitution of Karim Onisiwo for his debut in the Austrian national team.

In September 2014, Onisiwo was called up for the first time in an Austrian national football team when the coach of the U-21 team Werner Gregoritsch brought him into the squad for the last two U-21 European Championship qualifiers against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Spain . He was used in the game against Bosnia-Herzegovina from the 81st minute for Louis Schaub and was not taken into account in the game against England, which ended 1-1 and meant that the Austrians were runners-up in the group behind the Spaniards in the current qualifying competition. This was the only time Onisiwo was used in an U-21 international match. A little more than a year later, he was nominated by ÖFB team boss Marcel Koller for the Austrian senior national team , which had previously qualified for the 2016 European Championship in France . He was supposed to compensate for Martin Harnik's injury-related loss . In the friendly against Switzerland on November 17, 2015, Onisiwo finally came on the field in the 58th minute of play for Jakob Jantscher and played on the right offensive outside. The game in front of their own audience was lost with 1: 2; it was the only defeat in the calendar year.

Almost exactly a year to the day after his international debut, Onisiwo played his second game for Austria when he started the 0-0 draw in the friendly against Slovakia on November 15, 2016 by Marcel Koller and played through in the 84th minute Kevin Wimmer was replaced. Due to his lengthy injury period, he was not considered in the subsequent 19 international matches under Koller or his successor Franco Foda . After a few failures, Onisiwo was nominated in mid-March 2019 together with Marc Janko from FC Lugano and Maximilian Wöber from FC Sevilla from Foda to the ÖFB team for the qualification for the EM 2020, which will start shortly thereafter . In the 0-1 defeat in the first qualifying game against Poland , Onisiwo came onto the pitch for Florian Grillitsch in the 84th minute . In the away game against Israel three days later , which ended in a 2: 4 defeat for Austria, Onisiwo was substituted on for Xaver Schlager in the 60th minute of the game .
