societies

Szalai began playing football in 1994 with Honvéd Budapest and moved to Újpest Budapest in 2000 . In 2004, at the age of 16, he moved to the youth department of VfB Stuttgart . With VfB he became German junior champions in the 2004/05 season and also scored the winning goal to make it 1-0 in the final against VfL Bochum . The 2006/07 season he played in the second team of VfB and was third in the table with her in the Regionalliga Süd.

In August 2007 Szalai moved to the second team of the Spanish record champions Real Madrid . After he was unable to prevail in his first season against his club colleague José Callejón and was rarely used, he became a regular at Alberto Bueno's side in 2008/09 . His achievements led Real Madrid to include him in the team for the Champions League in January to replace Klaas-Jan Huntelaar , who was not eligible to play there .

9 January 2010 Szalai was until the end of season 2009/10 at the 1. FSV Mainz 05 borrowed. On April 10, 2010, the attacker scored his first Bundesliga goal in the match against Borussia Dortmund when he scored in the 30th minute to make it 1-0. In July 2010 he was firmly committed. On January 29, 2011, he was seriously injured (ruptured ligament and cruciate ligament) and was therefore out of the season. He made his comeback in the Bundesliga after almost a year on January 22nd, 2012 in the Mainz 2-3 defeat against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . On March 30, 2013, in the game against Werder Bremen, he scored the fastest goal in the Bundesliga for a team that hadn't kicked off after twelve seconds. His contract ran until June 30, 2015.

Szalai joined the season 2013/14 for FC Schalke 04 , where he signed a four-year contract. He was signed as an alternative in the attack for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar . Huntelaar injured himself on matchday two, so he was out for the rest of the first half of the season. With Szalai and Chinedu Obasi there were only two other strikers in the squad, Szalai was seeded in the Schalke storm. After four goals in the first eight Bundesliga games and two goals in the 3-2 win in the Champions League qualification against PAOK Saloniki , he remained without a goal in 14 consecutive games and lost his regular place after Huntelaar's recovery.

For the 2014/15 season , Szalai moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . In the 2015/16 winter break he was loaned to league competitor Hannover 96 until the end of the season. The Lower Saxony had a subsequent purchase option. After relegation with Hannover 96, Szalai returned to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for the 2016/17 season . The Hungarian played 100 league games for the Kraichgauer and was third with the team in the 2017/18 season .

After the 2nd matchday of the 2019/20 season , Szalai returned to Mainz 05 and received a contract that ran until 2021.

National team

Szalai played for the U-20 and U-21 national teams of the Hungarian Association .

For an international match against Northern Ireland on 19 November 2008 Szalai was first in the cadre of senior national appeal, but did not play. He made his debut in the national jersey on February 11, 2009 in Tel Aviv in the 0-1 defeat in a test international match against the selection of Israel .

National coach Bernd Storck called him to the Hungarian squad for the 2016 European Football Championship in France. In the opening game against Austria, he initiated the Hungarian 2-0 victory with the first goal. Nevertheless, he was not in the first team against Iceland and only came into the game in the closing stages. He played the last two games, including the lost round of 16, from the starting grid.
