Achim Beierlorzer (born November 20, 1967 in Erlangen ) is a German soccer coach and former soccer player. He has been the head coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05 since November 18, 2019 .

Career as a player

Achim Beierlorzer played for TSV Neunkirchen am Brand and joined the youth team of 1. FC Nürnberg in 1984 . From 1986 to 1988 he was for the second team of the club, initially in the third-class Oberliga Bayern and after relegation in the Bavarian regional league below, and then played for a year at league competitor SpVgg Jahn Forchheim . In 1989 he moved to SpVgg Fürth , where he was initially in the squad of the second team and later played with the men in the regional league, the major league and, from 1994, in the new third-class regional league south . In the seasons 1990/91 , 1991/92 and 1992/93 Beierlorzer took part in the DFB Cup with the Fürth team, but never got past the second round. In 1996 he moved to SC 04 Schwabach , for which he initially worked for two years in the now fifth-class regional league, and after promotion for four years in the Oberliga Bayern.

Career as a coach

In 2002 Beierlorzer ended his career at SC 04 Schwabach and became the team's head coach for the 2002/03 season . From 2004 to 2010 he was a player-coach at SV Kleinsendelbach . Subsequently, his former club SpVgg Greuther Fürth signed him as a coach of the U17 .

In 2014 Beierlorzer moved to RB Leipzig , which had just been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga , and was initially coach of the U17s for six months . After RB Leipzig separated from Alexander Zorniger in February 2015, who did not receive a contract for the new season and therefore immediately gave up his position, Beierlorzer trained a professional team for the first time: Sports director Ralf Rangnick appointed him interim coach until the end of the season and should continue the difficult season Complete the situation in the best possible way. The originally intended goal of promotion directly to the Bundesliga was subsequently further lost sight of; under him the team finally reached fifth place in the table. In the 2015/16 season he assisted the new head coach Rangnick, who was limited to one year, as assistant coach, with whom he finally made it to the Bundesliga . After Ralph Hasenhüttl took over as trainer in Leipzig, Beierlorzer moved back one row from the coaching team and since 2016 has been the trainer of the Leipzig U19s as well as the sporting director of the youth team from the U16s.

For the 2017/18 season he moved to the second division SSV Jahn Regensburg as head coach and inherited Heiko Herrlich . He signed a two-year contract, which was extended from June 2018 to June 2022. He finished the season with the newcomer in 5th place. In the season 2018/19 followed the 8th Place.

For the 2019/20 season , Beierlorzer took over the Bundesliga team of 1. FC Köln as the successor to interim coach André Pawlak . He signed a contract with the promoted team until June 30, 2021. On November 9, 2019, Beierlorzer was released when the team was in 17th place with 7 points after the 11th match day. On November 15, 2019, 1. FC Köln and Beierlorzer agreed to terminate the contract.

On November 18, 2019, just a few days after his separation from 1. FC Köln , Beierlorzer took over the 16th place league competitor 1. FSV Mainz 05 , who had also split from his head coach Sandro Schwarz after the 11th match day . He received a contract with a term until June 30, 2022.

family

Beierlorzer's older brother Bertram (* 1957) also played in Neunkirchen am Brand and Nuremberg youth football and then, unlike Achim, continued his career in the Bundesliga , where he played for a number of years for FC Bayern Munich . With TSV Vestenbergsgreuth he played, compared to his brother, on the other hand for the smaller of the clubs that were to form SpVgg Greuther Fürth in 1995 . Between 1995 and 1996 Bertram Beierlorzer was a coach at the club and thus also trained his brother.
