Pellegrino Matarazzo (born November 28, 1977 in Wayne , New Jersey ) is a former US-American - Italian soccer player and current coach , who has been the head coach of VfB Stuttgart since January 2020 .

Life and playing career

Matarazzo grew up as the son of Italian immigrants in the US state of New Jersey . He studied mathematics at Columbia University in New York . During his studies, the central defender , who also often moved into the defensive midfield , played for the Columbia Lions , his university's soccer team in the Ivy League .

After graduating, he went to Germany in 2000 . Here he played in the 2000/01 season, initially in the Oberliga Südwest for Eintracht Bad Kreuznach . In 2001 he moved to SV Wehen in the third-class Regionalliga Süd . In the meantime, Matarazzo played in the 2003/04 season in the Regionalliga Nord for Preußen Münster , before returning to the 2004/05 regional league season , which ended this season in third place with one point behind the promotion places. In the regional league season 2005/06 he was active in the north relay for SG Wattenscheid 09 . In 2006 Matarazzo went to the second team of 1. FC Nuremberg , with whom he qualified for the Regionalliga Süd in the 2007/08 season in the Bayern League . On the 5th match day of the 2009/10 season he played his last regional league game for FCN II.

Coaching career

In 2010, Matarazzo became assistant coach of the second team at 1. FC Nürnberg under head coach René Müller , under whom he had played there for the last three years of his playing career. In April 2011 Matarazzo took over as interim coach of the second team until the end of the season and was then again assistant coach of the team under Michael Wiesinger . On September 11, 2012, he became the head coach of the B1 juniors (U17) of Nuremberg, who played in the B-Junior Bundesliga . At the beginning of the 2013/14 season , the FCN promoted him to head coach of the A-Juniors (U19). In the summer of 2017 he moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , where he was the U17 head coach in the first half of the 2017/18 season before he became assistant coach of the Bundesliga team under Julian Nagelsmann .

In January 2020, Matarazzo took over the second division team of VfB Stuttgart as the successor to Tim Walter and signed a contract with a term until June 30, 2021. At this point, Stuttgart were on the 18th matchday of the 2019/20 season with 31 points 3rd place. Before the end of the season, the club prematurely extended the contract for another year, the working paper is valid for both national leagues. Under Matarazzo, VfB played an unsettled remainder of the season, but with two clear victories on the 32nd and 33rd matchdays they were able to gain direct promotion with 58 points behind Arminia Bielefeld .
