Saša Kalajdžić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Саша Калајџић ; * July 7, 1997 ), mostly Sasa Kalajdzic in German-speaking countries , is an Austrian football player of Serbian descent. Originally a midfielder , he has been used mostly as a striker since 2016 . In his youth he played for various Viennese clubs and then prevailed in professional football at the local club Admira Wacker Mödling . In summer 2019 he moved to the German Bundesliga - relegated VfB Stuttgart . With the Austrian U21 national team , he took part in the 2019 European Championship for that age group.

Seven years after his birth, Kalajdžić began playing football at SV Donau Wien in the Kaisermühlen district in the east of the city. After two years he moved to SR Donaufeld Wien in the neighboring Donaufeld district . Four years later, in 2010, the now 13-year-old joined the youth team of the then second-class First Vienna FC on the other side of the Danube. In 2014 he returned to Donaufeld and, as a 17-year-old, made two short appearances for the combat team - the Austrian name for the first men's team - in the third-class Regionalliga Ost . After a long absence, the Donaufelder were promoted back to the regional league, but this guest appearance lasted only a year and as the penultimate , the team relegated to the fourth-class Vienna city league . There the now 18-year-old came to other short assignments and from April 2016 he won a regular place.

Seven goals in 16 missions attracted the interest of Bundesliga club FC Admira Wacker Mödling , who are based at the gates of the capital, and the change took place in summer 2016. At Admira Wacker, Kalajdžić initially played for the amateur team in the Regionalliga Ost. There he soon had a regular place in the starting line-up. His coach Ernst Baumeister saw Kalajdžić's strengths more in attack than in midfield and therefore put him in the front line. After the end of the season Kalajdžić was able to look back on 27 games and ten goals and an eleventh place in the Regionalliga Ost . From summer 2017, the tall Kalajdžić was regularly used in the Bundesliga team, initially under coach Damir Burić , who soon preferred the second German league to the first Austrian and went to SpVgg Greuther Fürth . He was succeeded by the well-known Ernst Baumeister. For the Bundesliga team, Kalajdžić came to a personal record of 20 competitive appearances, four goals and seven assists that season after suffering a metatarsal fracture in March, which was associated with a break of several months for him. With fifth place, the team even qualified for the European Cup.

Due to his injury, Kalajdžić missed the two ultimately unsuccessful games of the second qualifying round of the Europa League against CSKA Sofia and returned to the team in September with a brief appearance and a goal. In November, however, the unfortunate injury caused the next forced break, this time it was a tear in the syndesmosis ligament . The second half of the season was then injury-free and Kalajdžić scored seven goals in twelve games; so he contributed significantly to the barely made relegation .

Kalajdžić's qualities were also noticed in the neighboring country and on July 5, 2019, he moved to VfB Stuttgart , who had just been relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga , where he received a contract that ran until June 2023. One day after his move, he went to the training camp in St. Gallen, Switzerland, with his new team, which had already started preparing for the new season more than two weeks earlier . About two weeks after his engagement, he sustained a serious knee injury that required a six to eight month break. On May 28, 2020, he made his first competitive appearance for VfB Stuttgart on the 28th matchday of the 2019/20 season in the game against Hamburger SV , when he was substituted on in the 78th minute; a few minutes later he was also involved in the preparation for the 3-2 winner. He scored his first goal for Stuttgart on matchday 33 in a 6-0 away win at 1. FC Nürnberg .

National team

Kalajdžić played six games for the Austrian U21 team . With her he took part in the U21 European Championship in the summer of 2019 , which was held in Italy and San Marino . The team was eliminated from the competition after three preliminary round matches. Kalajdžić came on as a substitute in the first game and played in the last group game against Germany from the start. The German goalkeeper Alexander Nübel hit him in a defensive attempt with his knee in the head, the penalty was converted by Kevin Danso to make it 1-1.

Kalajdžić is also eligible to play for Serbia .
