Beginnings in Switzerland
Gregor Kobel, son of the former ice hockey player Peter Kobel (including ZSC Lions , HC Lugano and HC Davos ), began playing football in his hometown at FC Seefeld Zurich . At the age of eight he moved to the Grasshopper Club Zurich , where he was trained in the club's internal youth department .
Change to Hoffenheim
After TSG 1899 Hoffenheim made contact through the Swiss Football Association , Kobel was only loaned out for 2 years in September 2014 and then firmly committed. In the 2014/15 season , Kobel replaced Dominik Draband, one year older, in the A-Juniors (U19) and played three times in the A-Juniors' Bundesliga . In the season 2015/16 followed 16 appearances. In the spring of 2016, he also played five times in the second team in the fourth-class Regionalliga Südwest , after having been a member of the matchday squad from time to time for the entire season.
For the 2016/17 season Kobel received a professional contract that ran until June 30, 2020 and was promoted to Julian Nagelsmann's professional squad . There he was the third goalkeeper behind Oliver Baumann and Alexander Stolz . Kobel was not used by the professionals, but gained match experience in the regional league, in which he was used 26 times. In the 2017/18 season , Kobel was behind Baumann at the Bundesliga games mostly instead of pride in the matchday squad. He played 8 times in the regional league and was also preferred to Baumann by Nagelsmann in both DFB Cup games . The same was the situation in the first half of the 2018/19 season : Kobel played both cup games until they were eliminated and sat on the bench at the Bundesliga games. On the 5th matchday he was preferred to Baumann for one game and made his Bundesliga debut in the 3-1 away win against Hannover 96 . In addition, the Swiss player played four times in the regional league.
Via Augsburg to Stuttgart
At the beginning of January 2019, Kobel moved on loan to league rivals FC Augsburg until the end of the 2018/19 season to strengthen the goalkeeping team around the criticized Fabian Giefer and Andreas Luthe . Kobel immediately became a regular goalkeeper and had played 16 Bundesliga games by the end of the season; he was injured only once.
For the 2019/20 season, Kobel extended his contract in Hoffenheim until June 30, 2021 and switched to the 2nd Bundesliga for one year on loan to relegated VfB Stuttgart . After the departure of the regular goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler , the Swiss was able to prevail in the preparation against the also newly signed Fabian Bredlow and became the new number 1. After 23 goals in 15 league games, Bredlow received for the last 3 games before the winter break from head coach Tim Walter the trust. From the winter preparations, however, the Swiss emerged again as a regular goalkeeper under Walter's successor Pellegrino Matarazzo . Kobel played 31 league games and was promoted to the Bundesliga with VfB.
On July 28, 2020 Kobel finally moved to VfB Stuttgart and signed a contract with the Swabians that runs until June 2024.
National team
After appearances for all youth national teams from the U15 onwards, the goalkeeper played for the U21s in his country from 2016 to 2018 , with whom he missed the qualification for the EM 2019 .
In 2017 and 2018 Kobel was in the A-Team squad for two friendship and one Nations League games , but was not used.
