Andreas Luthe (born March 10, 1987 in Velbert ) is a German football player . The goalkeeper is under contract with Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin .

youth

Andreas Luthe started playing soccer at SuS Niederbonsfeld when he was seven. He played there, among other things, as a central defender and right winger; only after his move to Borussia Velbert he was in goal. In 2001 he moved to the youth division at VfL Bochum .

Professional career

From 2006 he was in the second team at VfL Bochum. For the 2009/10 season he signed a professional contract there and initially belonged to the professional squad as the fourth goalkeeper.

After separating from coach Marcel Koller , Luthe was promoted to number two under interim coach Frank Heinemann . He played his first competitive game for the professionals on September 22, 2009 in the DFB Cup , when he replaced Philipp Heerwagen , who had broken his jaw. His Bundesliga debut followed on September 25, 2009 against 1. FC Nürnberg , against whom he did not concede a goal in his team's 1-0 victory. Two more missions followed, then he returned to the bench. At the end of the season, Bochum was relegated to the second division.

In the 2010/11 season, Luthe took over the position of regular keeper on the 5th matchday after Heerwagen had not been flawless a few times before. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he was appointed the new captain of VfL.

After VfL Bochum started the 2015/16 season successfully with five wins, the successes decreased in the middle of the first half of the season, so that from the eleventh to the 16th matchday they could only get two points; Luthe never conceded a goal on these match days, but had to accept only 17 goals in a total of 16 league games. Bochum head coach Gertjan Verbeek reacted with changes in the team and took Luthe out of the starting line-up for the game on December 6, 2015 (17th matchday) against 1. FC Heidenheim by giving Manuel Riemann the preference in goal. Luthe responded to this decision the day before the game with criticism, which he publicly expressed on Facebook . He explained that he was "according to kicker online one of the best-rated players of the entire second division season" and "made 16 league games without any serious mistakes". The reason for his removal from the starting line-up in the form in which it happened did not "come close to satisfying" him. Despite this development, he thanked Verbeek in his publication for having "made him a better and more efficient goalkeeper" since he took over as coach in Bochum. Luthe's statement was deleted after a short time. After he was still on the bench against Heidenheim, the club declared on December 8, 2015 that Luthe would be given a “pause for thought” that would free him from playing and training up to and including January 3, 2016. Sports director Christian Hochstätter said that this gave Luthe the opportunity "to process the incident of the past week appropriately". Luthe accepted this decision and regretted the timing of his post on Facebook. He also admitted that he had underestimated the impact and extent of his statement.

For the 2016/17 season , Luthe moved to Bundesliga club FC Augsburg , with whom he received a contract valid until 2020. There he made his competitive debut in the 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund on May 13, 2017, the 33rd match day, after regular goalkeeper Marwin Hitz was unable to play with hip problems. As a result, Luthe was still Hitz's representative and moved firmly into the goal after his change in summer 2018. In the second half of the 2018/19 season , in which Augsburg was in a relegation battle, the keeper lost his place as number 1 to Gregor Kobel , who was on loan in the winter and whom he only represented twice in the end of the season due to an injury. In summer 2019, newcomer Tomáš Koubek received the trust of head coach Schmidt . However, the Czech often made mistakes, which ultimately led Schmidt and his successor Herrlich to back to Luthe at the beginning of March 2020.

Since Koubek had a long-term contract and Rafał Gikiewicz had signed another goalkeeper, Luthe switched to Bundesliga rivals 1. FC Union Berlin at the beginning of August 2020 as the designated successor to Gikiewicz .

Others

Luthe has been a member of the players' union of the Association of Contract Soccer Players (VdV) since June 30, 2015 .

On July 1, 2020, Luthe announced its future collaboration with the goalkeeper glove startup Catch & Keep Goalkeeper Gloves.
