Christian Gentner (born August 14, 1985 in Nürtingen ) is a German soccer player . He is under contract with 1. FC Union Berlin .
Club career
Beginnings and VfB Stuttgart
Christian Gentner started playing football at TSV Beuren when he was three . Then he played for a year in the youth of VfL Kirchheim . In 1999 he moved to VfB Stuttgart , with whom the midfielder won the German A youth championship in 2003. For the regional league team of VfB he made his debut on the 1st match day of the 2004/05 regional league season when the winger came on as a substitute for Denis Berger in the 88th minute in the game against Sportfreunde Siegen . In the following game he was used from the start. In the course of the season he impressed with good performances, so that he was appointed to the Bundesliga squad by the then VfB coach Matthias Sammer . There he made his debut in the professional team on February 20, 2005. In the 1-0 win against Hertha BSC , Gentner came on in the 83rd minute for the then goal scorer Cacau . In the following season, the midfielder was definitely part of the professional squad.
He scored his first competitive goal for VfB Stuttgart in the 89th minute in the preliminary round of the UEFA Cup against the Slovenian club NK Domzale . Gentner scored his first league goal on matchday 33 of the 2005/06 season against his future employer VfL Wolfsburg with a 2-1 winner. In the summer of 2006, he extended his contract with VfB Stuttgart until 2010. In the 2006/07 season , he was just as often substituted on or off in the 15 games he played. At the end of the season he won the German championship with the team.
VfL Wolfsburg
In July 2007 he was loaned from VfB Stuttgart to VfL Wolfsburg . Under the former Stuttgart trainer Felix Magath , Gentner played in the regular team of the "Wolves". At the end of the season he and his team made it into the UEFA Cup and, with 5th place, the Wolfsburg-based team's best placement since they were in the league. In August 2008, VfB Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg announced that Gentner had been sold to Wolfsburg. Gentner justified his change with what he saw as a more promising perspective. No information was given about the transfer fee.
In the 2008/09 season Gentner was German champion for the second time. In addition to Marcel Schäfer and Andrea Barzagli , he was the only Wolfsburg player who was used in all league matches. With ten assists he was the second best preparer of his team behind Zvjezdan Misimović .
Return to VfB Stuttgart
Gentner returned to VfB Stuttgart on July 1, 2010 after his contract in Wolfsburg had expired . On January 6, 2013, he reached an agreement with VfB on a contract extension and signed a contract that was valid until the end of June 2016 with the option for a further year.
After Serdar Tasci left the club on August 30, 2013, Gentner was appointed Stuttgart's new captain for the 2013/14 season by VfB head coach Thomas Schneider . On May 10, 2016, he extended his contract until 2019.
After being relegated to the Bundesliga in 2016, VfB managed to gain direct promotion as champions of the second division; As team captain, Gentner presented the “master rim”.
In the 2017/18 season , Gentner collided with Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels in the game against VfL Wolfsburg on September 16, 2017 , who accidentally hit his head with his knee. Gentner remained unconscious after the collision and almost suffocated because his tongue sank back, which then blocked his airway. Stuttgart's team doctors, who ran to Gentner's court, although the game had not yet been interrupted, possibly prevented worse. Gentner suffered fractures of the eye socket, the upper jaw and the zygomatic bone. He therefore had to be operated on several times and was absent for around two months. There was no lasting damage to him. Casteels received no warning for boarding, as referee Guido Winkmann had rated it as an "unfortunate collision" and video referee Deniz Aytekin confirmed his opinion. Sky TV expert and ex-referee Markus Merk considered at least a yellow card to be necessary because Casteels had "used his knee as a weapon". The incident sparked a debate about the dangerous and unhealthy boarding of goalkeepers, as well as renewed debate about the effectiveness of the video evidence . In a few subsequent games, Gentner wore a protective mask made of “ carbon ”. In March 2019, Gentner told 11 Freunde magazine that after the accident he had forgotten that VfB Stuttgart had meanwhile been promoted to the 1st Bundesliga.
In the 2018/19 season , Gentner, still as team captain, was relegated to the second division again with VfB. Following the season he agreed with the club management not to extend his contract, which was running out at the end of the season; the midfielder played over 370 competitive games for the club.
1. FC Union Berlin
For the 2019/20 season, Gentner joined the Bundesliga promoted 1. FC Union Berlin for one season . On March 1, 2020, he played his 400th Bundesliga game against VfL Wolfsburg . He is the 67th Bundesliga player to reach this number. He extended his contract, as Union announced on July 3, 2020, without entering into the term.
National team
In September 2004 Gentner was nominated for the first time for the U20 national team , for which he played a total of 14 games and scored three goals. In 2005, Gentner played twice for the 2006 team , the DFB's perspective team for the 2006 World Cup . On May 19, 2009 he was nominated for the first time by national coach Joachim Loew for the A-national team of the DFB's Asia trip and on May 29, he had his first A-international appearance in the game against China . Three more missions in 2009 and one in August 2010 (against Denmark ) followed. After 2010, Gentner was no longer nominated for the national team.
