youth

Kruse grew up in Reinbek, his birthplace, east of Hamburg . In his youth he was a HSV fan. He started playing soccer at TSV Reinbek in 1992 . In the summer of 1998 he moved to the Hamburg club TSV Kirchwerder, which one year later merged with SV Ochsenwerder-Moorfleet to form SC Vier- und Marschlande .

Werder Bremen

In January 2006, Kruse moved to Werder Bremen , whose second team he was part of from 2006 to 2009. Until 2006, Kruse had also regularly acted as a referee in lower leagues, but decided against a career as a referee after being appointed to the Werder Bremen youth team. In the 2007/08 season , coach Thomas Schaaf appointed him to the professional squad because of personnel concerns. On September 29, 2007 he played his first Bundesliga game in the 8-1 win against Arminia Bielefeld , in which he came into play in the 63rd minute for Jurica Vranješ and prepared the 6-1 for Markus Rosenberg .

FC St. Pauli

For the 2009/10 season, Kruse moved to FC St. Pauli on a free transfer and signed a two-year contract. In 2011 he extended until 2014 and went with the relegated club to the second Bundesliga, in which he became a goal- scoring midfielder alongside Fin Bartels and Florian Bruns . After the home game against TSV 1860 Munich , to which Kruse contributed two goals, he was listed for the third time in the eleven of the day of the kicker sports magazine after seven match days .

Sc freiburg

For the 2012/13 season he was signed by SC Freiburg . There he moved into the semi-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time with the alleged relegation candidate . Kruse played in all 34 Bundesliga games and, together with Jonathan Schmid, was the team's top scorer with eleven goals each. At the end of the season, SC Freiburg reached fifth place in the UEFA Europa League .

Borussia Monchengladbach

For the 2013/2014 season , Borussia Mönchengladbach signed Kruse. He moved to the Lower Rhine for a fixed transfer fee of 2.5 million euros and received a contract there until June 30, 2017. In July 2013, the Association of Contract Soccer Players awarded him the “Silver Arrow” as the best newcomer of the previous season. On August 17, 2013 (2nd matchday) he scored his first goal for Borussia in the 21st minute in the home game against Hannover 96 .

VfL Wolfsburg

In May 2015, VfL Wolfsburg signed him for the 2015/16 season . Kruse signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2019. Werder Bremen

In August 2016, Kruse returned to Werder Bremen, although the exact contract term was not specified. In the 2-1 home win against FC Ingolstadt 04 on December 3, 2016 (13th matchday), he scored his first Bundesliga goal for the Werder professional team. In the 4-2 win on April 22, 2017 (30th matchday), also against FC Ingolstadt 04, he scored all four goals. He is the first SV Werder player since Frank Neubarth in 1986 to succeed. The last three goals in this game between the 81st and 90 + 4. Minute also mark Kruse's first flawless hat trick in the Bundesliga. With a total of 15 goals, he was the team's top scorer in the 2016/17 season . During the 2017/18 season, Kruse suffered a broken collarbone in the game against FC Schalke 04 (1: 2) on September 16, 2017 (4th matchday) after a foul by Thilo Kehrer , after which he was out for about a month. On November 19, 2017 (12th matchday), he again scored a flawless hat trick in the second half in a 4-0 win against Hannover 96 .

For the 2018/19 season , Kruse was appointed the new team captain by head coach Florian Kohfeldt . On May 17, 2019, Kruse announced that it would not extend his contract, which was running out at the end of the season.

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

For the 2019/20 season, the attacker moved to the Turkish Süper Lig for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , where he received a three-year contract. Here the German was able to earn a regular position and was preferred as a hanging tip . In mid-June 2020, Kruse unilaterally canceled his contract before the 28th match day due to a lack of salary payments. Fenerbahçe described the allegations as "unfair and unfounded" and made it clear that Kruse would not owe any salary until the season interruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic around three months earlier. The association wanted to take legal action against the termination. Until then, Kruse was always in the starting line-up in 20 league games and scored 7 goals.

On May 16, 2013, Kruse was appointed by Joachim Löw for the international matches against Ecuador (May 29, 2013) and the United States (June 2, 2013) in the squad of the German national team. He made his A international debut on May 29, 2013 in a 4-2 win in the friendly against the selection of Ecuador in Boca Raton ( United States ); in the 79th minute he was substituted for Dennis Aogo . His first international goal he scored on June 2, 2013 in Washington in the 3: 4 defeat against the United States with the goal to 2: 4 in the 79th minute. In the squad for the 2014 World Cup , Kruse, who had the most scoring opportunities (98) in Europe in the 2013/14 season, was missing. On October 11, 2015, he scored the 2-1 winner against Georgia , through which the German national team qualified as group winners for the 2016 European Football Championship .

After two incidents outside of football, he was removed from the national team by national coach Löw on March 21, 2016 for the upcoming country test matches against England and Italy.
