Urs Fischer (born February 20, 1966 in Triengen ) is a Swiss football coach and former player .
Career
Urs Fischer, who grew up in Zurich-Affoltern , played in the youth teams of FC Zurich from 1973 and made his debut as a professional in the first team in the 1983/84 season. Until 1987 and again from 1995 to 2003, Fischer played at FC Zurich and scored five goals in 302 league games. In 2000 he won the cup as captain with the team. He played a further 243 games between 1987 and 1995 for FC St. Gallen (ten goals). Under national coach Uli Stielike , Fischer made four international appearances.
Trainer in Zurich and Thun
Fischer ended his football career in May 2003. After his resignation, he successfully trained the U-14 and two years the U-21 team of FC Zurich. After an interlude as assistant coach of the first team in the 2007/08 season, he trained again for the U-21s of FC Zurich.
After Bernard Challandes was fired on April 19, 2010, he initially took on the role of coach at FCZ ad interim and later became head coach with a contract until the summer of 2013. In the 2010/11 season he was Swiss runner-up with FC Zurich. On March 12, 2012, he was immediately released by FC Zurich. Fischer took over FC Thun in the second half of the 2012/13 season .
FC Basel
For the 2015/16 season, Fischer was coach of FC Basel . He signed a two-year contract. With FC Basel he won the Swiss championship in 2016 and 2017 and the cup in 2017 . In April 2017, the club's management announced that they would start the 2017/18 season with a new coach.
Union Berlin
On June 1, 2018, Fischer was hired by 1. FC Union Berlin as the new head coach. On May 27, 2019, he was promoted to the Bundesliga in relegation with the club , which extended his contract to June 2021. Fischer was voted Berlin's Coach of the Year 2019.
