Julian Nagelsmann (born July 23, 1987 in Landsberg am Lech ) is a German football coach . As a football player at FC Augsburg and TSV 1860 Munich , he had to end his career early without a competitive game in the men's area due to injury and then became a coach in the youth department of FC Augsburg. At TSG 1899 Hoffenheim he became a temporary assistant coach at the end of 2012 at the age of 25 . From February 2016 until the end of the 2018/19 season he was the head coach of the Hoffenheim Bundesliga team, at the age of 28 he was the youngest full-time coach in the Bundesliga to date. He has been the head coach of RB Leipzig since July 1, 2019 .

Career

As a player

Nagelsmann began his career at FC Issing and then moved to the youth department of FC Augsburg , where he played until 2002. He then switched to the youth team of TSV 1860 Munich . There he was the captain of the U-17 team and completed 31 games in the A-Juniors Bundesliga in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons . For the 2006/07 season Nagelsmann moved up to the second team, but could not complete a competitive game due to injuries. He then returned for the 2007/08 season to FC Augsburg, whose second team he was a member. After Nagelsmann suffered meniscus and cartilage damage, he ended his career at the age of 20 after a second operation due to the risk of osteoarthritis without playing a competitive game in 2007.

Beginnings as co-trainer and youth trainer

After the end of his playing career, Nagelsmann was assistant coach of Thomas Tuchel until the end of his ongoing contract with the second team , for whom he sighted the opponents. It was through this activity that Nagelsmann had the idea of ​​starting a career as a coach. He then worked under his former coach Alexander Schmidt as assistant coach of the U-17 team of his former club TSV 1860 Munich.

From the 2010/11 season, Nagelsmann took on coaching duties in the youth field at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . In December 2012 he moved up to the professional coaching staff as an assistant coach under the interim coach Frank Kramer . In the further course of the season he assisted Kramer's successors Marco Kurz and Markus Gisdol and achieved relegation with the team in relegation.

For the 2013/14 season Nagelsmann took over as head coach of the club's A-Juniors (U19). With these he became the youngest U-19 master coach at the age of 26 . At the end of October 2015, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim announced that, after completing his training, Nagelsmann would take over the first team from the 2016/17 season as the successor to Huub Stevens , who had been introduced on the same day, regardless of their later league affiliation . In the 2017/18 season , Nagelsmann finished third in the Bundesliga with TSG Hoffenheim and qualified directly for the 2018/19 Champions League . Before the 2018/19 season , Nagelsmann announced that he would withdraw from his contract, which was valid until June 30, 2021, after the season by means of a release clause. Moved to RB Leipzig in 2019

On June 21, 2018, RB Leipzig signed Nagelsmann as the new head coach from the 2019/20 season . He received a contract that ran until June 30, 2023. In his first season as head coach of RB Leipzig, he finished the 2019/20 Bundesliga season in third place and qualified directly for the 2020/21 Champions League. Nagelsmann lost his father at the age of 20.
