Hennef (Sieg) is a town in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia with around 100 villages on the Sieg River . The number of localities is even higher if one takes into account the districts that are grouped into localities. This is why Hennef is also known as the “City of 100 Villages”.

geography

Geographical location

Hennef is located between Bergisches Land and Westerwald at the beginning of the valley of the Sieg , about 30 km as the crow flies south-east of Cologne and 14 km as the crow flies in an east-northeast direction from Bonn . The highest point in the urban area is a good 285  m above sea level. NHN reached on the edge of the Eichholz district , the lowest at almost 60  m above sea level. NHN an der Sieg near the district of Stossdorf .

In the west, Siegburg and Sankt Augustin border the urban area, in the north the communities Neunkirchen-Seelscheid and Ruppichteroth , in the east the community Eitorf , in the southeast the association community Asbach in Rhineland-Palatinate and in the south Königswinter .

City structure

The area of the city is about 105 square kilometers. This makes Hennef the second largest municipality in the Rhein-Sieg district after Windeck . Hennef consists of the center, which has grown together with Geistingen in the southwest and Warth in the east, as well as other, in some cases widely dispersed, villages. The railway line separates the districts of Geistingen and Warth on one side and Hennef on the other. Several level crossings and a bridge cross the railway line. However, there is sometimes a kilometer between the crossing possibilities for cars.

Frankfurter Strasse (formerly B 8 , today Landesstrasse 333 ) runs through the city center . On both sides, next to the city with commercial retail, there are mainly residential areas - interrupted by a few mixed areas. In the east of Hennef - on Hossenberg - a new industrial area has been created. In addition, on the edge of the center in the Geistingen district, there is the approximately 50,000 square meter area of the spa park, which is advertised as a special area for recreational purposes. The town hall is, together with the market square, in the center of Hennef on Frankfurter Straße and near the Sieg. The rest of the Hennef city center is mainly designated as a residential area.

Hennef wants to win . Since 2005, the newly designed Chronos area has had a continuous waterfront promenade that cyclists and pedestrians can use. Alternatively, you can get to Sieg via a bike and hiking trail. In the Weingartsgasse district, there is a restaurant with outdoor dining right by a footbridge over the Sieg.

In addition to the western industrial area in Stossdorf, in which several large companies have their headquarters and on the edge of which there is also the former exhibition building (now a furniture store) and some supermarkets, is the village of Stossdorf. In the direction of Sieg there are mainly agricultural areas.

The other localities are largely self-contained and often emerged from courtyards. The districts of Uckerath, Bierth and Lichtenberg are an exception. Due to increased construction activity, these are growing closer and closer together. Uckerath is the largest sub-center in Hennef. It is right on the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and the municipality of Asbach in Rhineland-Palatinate.

List of localities

This list with 89 localities plus the central location corresponds to the listing on the city's website (as of January 2017):

Compared to the list from 2011, the following localities have ceased to exist because they are no longer listed as independent living spaces:

climate

The climate still largely corresponds to that of the Cologne Bay, but differs somewhat in the thunderstorm tendency and fog formation as well as more frequent rain due to the first mountain ranges of the Westerwald and Bergisches Land.

history

The place name Hennef is probably derived from the Hanfbach , which was previously called Hanapha . The official spelling of the city name has been using the addition "(Sieg)" since 1934 and is intended to prevent confusion with similar sounding place names. Hennef is also seen by some as a hemp city, since the CannaBusiness Expo took place here from 1996 to 1999 .

  • The current district of Geistingen was mentioned as early as 885 in a deed of donation to the St. Cassius monastery in Bonn .
  • In 1075 the church is mentioned: "in Hannafo". It is also Hennef's first mention.
  • In 1129 the church in Happerschoss was referred to as a foundation of the Archbishop Anno II of Cologne.

On January 1st, 1981, Hennef became a town .

The Hennef area was used for agriculture until the 19th century; Until the beginning of the 20th century, wine was grown on the slopes of the town. The winemaking profession died out due to bad weather conditions and competition from industrial wages. Since 1985 there has been a small vineyard area (200 vines) in the “Stadt Blankenberg” district. In 1869 Carl Reuther founded the "Reuther & Co. Landwirtschaftliche Maschinenfabrik Hennef"; In 1881 he founded the "Hennef Maschinenfabrik Carl Reuther und Reisert" together with Eduard Reisert. In 1950 the company was renamed "Chronos-Werk Reuther und Reisert". Reuther and Reisert invented the world's first automatic calibratable scale in 1883. In the second half of the 19th century, living conditions improved and prosperity increased.

In 1984 Hennef gave up the title of “state-approved Kneipp health resort ”; A holdover from the times of the spa business is the "Kurhaus Sebastian Kneipp".

The 46 seats of the city council are distributed as follows:

(As of May 2014)

In 1999 the parliamentary groups of the CDU and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen formed a coalition for the first time in the city's history. This continued after the 2004 council elections. After the local elections in 2009, the CDU entered into an alliance with the FDP, as it did before the local elections in 1999. This coalition no longer achieved a majority in the 2014 local elections due to significant losses. Since 2014, the CDU, FDP and “The Independent” have formed an alliance.

coat of arms

Hennef coat of arms
Blazon : “In red between two slim, silver towers with black window panels, a broad pinnacle tower of the same color crowned by three little towers; all stand on a silver ribbed vault and above a crenellated wall of the same color growing out of the rounded shield. The vault spans a red three-mountain, in the middle of which stands a silver shield with a soaring red lion, holding a blue bunch of grapes in its right paw, and blue-armored and tongued; the shield is flanked by five each and crowned by two silver crosses. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms shows the former castle of the city of Blankenberg in the upper part and goes back to the city seal of Blankenberg. Below is the coat of arms of the Duchy of Berg with the Bergisch lion, because Hennef used to belong to the Bergisches Land . The grapes refer to the fact that these were previously grown on the slopes of the mountains.

Town twinning

The city of Hennef (Sieg) maintains partnerships with the following cities:

In addition, there has been a friendship with Heilbad Heiligenstadt in Thuringia since 1992 .

Culture and sights

theatre

Hennef spa theater
Kur-Theater Hennef, hall with a view of the screen

In 2003 the Kurtheater Hennef , the last of three cinemas in Hennef, was closed. Thereupon, on the initiative of the city councilor at the time, Lutz Urbach , who ran this on a private initiative, together with Daniel Huys and Manfred Raderschad, an association was set up that has since kept the Kur-Theater alive as a cinema and cabaret. The association “Kur-Theater Hennef e. V. ”offers cinema events as well as a comprehensive cultural program in the Kur-Theater (190 seats). Since 2005, the cinema program of the Kur-Theater has been awarded eleven times by the Filmstiftung NRW with the annual film program award and four times with the cinema program award of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media .

In November 2008 the association celebrated its fifth anniversary and the 70th anniversary of the building. Ingo Teusch and Dr. Daniel Huys runs the association, which now has over 1000 members, together with a six-member board.

Carnival / 5th season

Hennef is a carnival stronghold in the Rhineland. As in Cologne, the carnival plays a special role in Hennef. At Carnival, Hennef is also a carnival stronghold in the Rhineland. This includes the carnival session, the various carnival parades and the annual storming of the town hall.

There are 27 carnival clubs throughout the city. A total of 7 carnival parades take place, the largest in the central town on Shrove Monday, for which you can register with the train control of the Hennef Carnival Committee.

Most of the carnival events are organized in detail by the 5 large societies that make up the Hennefer Karneval e. V. have merged:

  • first Hennef Carnival Society from 1902 e. V.
  • Große Geistinger Carnival Society 1897 e. V.
  • Across de Waat e. V.
  • 1. Hennef Stadtsoldaten from 1983 e. V.
  • Fidele Flotte Dondorf e. V.

Parks

The old spa park is located in the southern city center (Geistingen district) between Kurhausstrasse and Steimelsberg. It is reminiscent of the spa tradition in Hennef and enables various recreational uses. Among other things, there is a game reserve and a pond with ducks.

Natural monuments

To the south of Geistingen in the Weingartsberg forest at the level of the sports school there are two English oaks about a hundred meters apart. One is about three hundred years old, the other over five hundred years.

City of Blankenberg

The titular town of Blankenberg with its parish church Sankt Katharina (middle of the 13th century) attracts thousands of tourists every year. The medieval town lies between the Ahrenbachtal and horse depths high above the Sieg and offers a unique view over Hennef. At certain times of the year it is possible to visit the partially preserved castle complex. There is also a tower museum and a viticulture museum. The city of Blankenberg has gained tourist popularity through night watchman tours and special tours for children. The flea and handicraft market, which takes place once a year on the 2nd Sunday in September, is also interesting for a visit with the whole family.

Marian pilgrimage site in Bödingen

The Marian pilgrimage site Bödingen with its in 1408 and still very well preserved pilgrimage church " To the Sorrowful Mother of God " is another attraction in Hennef, which attracts not only tourists but also pilgrims . Over the centuries, the stream of pilgrims to Bödingen grew strongly and also helped the Bödingen Monastery, founded in 1424, to grow significantly. Although the monastery was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization , pilgrimages were and continue to take place. However, the flocks of pilgrims are considerably smaller today, even if they have increased again in recent years.

A special feature is the compassion festival introduced by the Cologne Provincial Council for the entire church province in 1423 , which has since been celebrated annually north of the Alps only in Bödingen.

Monument areas

Hennef is home to a total of three monument areas :

  • As early as 1987 the town center of Blankenberg was declared a monument area in its entirety. With its extensive castle complex and the half-timbered town center, the city of Blankenberg is still a medieval gem.
  • Only a little later, namely in 1989, the center of Bödingen was placed under monument protection in its entirety, which extends not only to the pilgrimage church. Rather, it includes the entire village center, which was rebuilt after the conflagration in 1636 and still contains many beautiful, well-preserved half-timbered houses.
  • Finally, in 2008 the monument area “Historical cultural landscape 'Lower Siegtal: City of Blankenberg - Bödingen'” was launched. The main components of the area include the town of Blankenberg with the castle on the one hand, and the pilgrimage site of Bödingen with the pilgrimage church on the other, as well as the entire Siegaue in between and connecting both sides.

The courtyards in the center of Hennef

In an area of just 200 meters on Frankfurter Strasse there are three well-preserved historic courtyards and a baroque residential building, which are, however, privately owned and can only be viewed from the street.

  • At the confluence of Steinstraße, opposite the former district court building, is the Heymershof from 1790, which was the seat of the district administration of the district of Siegburg between 1817 and 1825 and is still completely preserved today with its two economic wings.
  • A little further east follows the Proffenhof , which was built in 1722 and u. a. the Landdinger (judge) family of those von Proff served as residence. This family provided the Landdinger of the Blankenberg Office between 1660 and 1799. The eastern economic wing had to give way to the expansion of Beethovenstrasse.
  • In 1711 the Lindenhof was built, the garden of which is a listed building and which now houses an art gallery. Here, too, the two economic wings are almost completely preserved.
  • Opposite the Kaiserstraße is the moated castle , which was built in 1766 instead of an older building from 1582 and was also called Paeffgens-Hof for a long time after its builder. In front of the house, part of the former eponymous moat is still preserved, but is now dry. Historical outbuildings of the property no longer exist.

Soil monuments

The Hennef monument list shows a number of ground monuments . In addition to the town and castle Blankenberg mentioned above, this includes:

In addition to many events that can be attributed to the central location, regular events also take place in the numerous districts. This includes village festivals, shooting festivals, concerts or other cultural events. Examples are the regular events in Bödingen or in the city of Blankenberg or at Blankenberg Castle .

The Uckerath bypass, which should lead the B 8 past Hennef's largest sub-center, has been under discussion for several years . The project is part of the federal traffic route plan, several variants have been developed by the city. A decision on the route has not yet been made, also due to numerous public protests.

environment

Hennef is burdened by aircraft noise from the nearby Cologne / Bonn airport . In particular, the villages of Heisterschoss, Happerschoss, Stossdorf, Geistingen, Lanzenbach and the western city center are affected by this. Several citizens' initiatives have therefore been founded in the urban area which, together with citizens of other cities and municipalities, advocate a ban on night-time passenger and cargo flights.
