history

In 1969, as part of the municipal reorganization, the municipality of Hennef decided to set up a grammar school to expand educational opportunities with equal opportunities. On April 30, 1970, the Minister of Education approved the establishment of a modern-language and mathematical-scientific high school for boys and girls for the 1970/71 school year.

On September 7, 1970, the first lesson took place in the new "Gymnasium around Hennef", in which 61 students were taught by the headmaster Mr. K.-J. Jesgars, the permanent representative of the headmaster Dr. M. Ungewitter, two other teachers and the clergy of the Catholic and Protestant congregations. Since 171 new students were registered at the beginning of the 1971/72 school year and the building became too small, the school had to move to the Gartenstrasse primary school and employ three more teachers. In the same year the "Association of Friends and Supporters of the Hennef High School" was founded and the construction of today's school building was decided.

In the 1972/73 school year the number of pupils doubled, so that the question of more staff and additional rooms arose. The Gartenstrasse elementary school had to give way, and makeshift pavilions were set up. Four more teachers were hired. But despite further new hires, there was still a shortage of teachers. In the same year, the choice of the second foreign language was determined to be Latin or French. In the following school years the shortage of space and the shortage of teachers worsened until the new school building with 1060 students and 61 teachers could be moved into in August of the 1976/77 school year.

In 1978/79 the first graduates from Hennef grammar school received their Abitur. In 1981/82 the grammar school had 1,614 students and 104 teachers. The Hennef grammar school was and still is the largest in the Rhein-Sieg district .

In 2015 the school was awarded the “Good Healthy School” school development award.

The 1256 students are currently being taught by 106 teachers and 7 trainee teachers.

Educational offer

foreign languages

The first foreign language is English or Latin from the 5th grade. The second foreign language from grade 6 onwards is English if you choose Latin, and French if you choose English. Latin is no longer offered as a second foreign language. Since 2005 it has been possible to attend a music class - the so-called Con Brio class - in which French is taught as a second foreign language. Russian was also taught for a few years, but in 2014 it was replaced by Spanish.

Differentiation area

From grade 8, the pupils can freely choose part of the weekly compulsory lessons within the scope of the school offer; This offer includes French, Latin and Greek - each as a third foreign language, as well as computer science and the subject of European Global Studies. In this context, there is also the option of choosing a taster course for engineering professions, the Junior Engineer Academy .

These courses are taught with two to three hours per week and the achievements provided here are relevant for transfer. For this reason, the respective course selection is binding for two years; the third foreign language can be continued after these two years, while the other courses are completed after the two years.

music

Since the 2005/06 school year, the school has had the “Con Brio” music class, in which a class orchestra is formed in grades 5 and 6. There is also a choir and an orchestra that organize a concert every year together with the Con Brio class and various bands.

Afternoon care

Students in grades 5 to 7 have the opportunity to take part in midday and homework supervision on the five days of the week from 1.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.

Self-study centers

Two self-study centers offer both younger and older students the opportunity to work at school:

  • the learning workshop in the glass box for grades 5 to 8 with a computer with internet access and a selection of descriptive specialist literature as well as a small library
  • for the years 9 to 13 the upper level library with over 12,000 non-fiction and specialist books and German and foreign language magazines as well as computers with internet access and the latest DVDs and videos.

Additional offers

Projects to promote social skills

  • Students help students
This working group is supposed to promote the social competence of the pupils by taking on sponsorships; Older students take on two-year sponsorships for new students in the fifth and later the sixth grade in order to make it easier for them to start at school and to provide them with support.
The dispute settlement model is intended to help students in the lower grades with problems with one another. You will be supported by older, specially trained students.

Help with problems

In addition to sponsors, mediators, class teachers and other contact persons, specially trained counseling teachers offer pupils and parents their help with school and private problems.

Addiction prophylaxis

To point out the dangers of drug consumption, addiction prophylaxis projects such as Peer Education and Be Smart Don't Start ! carried out in the class groups.

Working groups

The school offers various working groups for pupils and parents, for example on the subjects of music, foreign languages, social affairs or theater.

Performances

In 2006 the musical Art or Coal , written by the teachers Stephan Busch and Wolf B. Reuter, was performed with great success, the plot of which was based on the opera Der Schauspieldirektor . Further musical projects followed. There are also regular school concerts. In 2018 Lea-Lina Oppermann's first play , the novel "What we thought, what we did", also premiered with great public interest.

Student exchange

In addition to class and study trips, the high school offers regular student exchanges with schools in Toulouse , Le Pecq (both France ), Tarnów ( Poland ) and Novgorod ( Russia ).

The "Pupils for Europe" program for grade 11 offers an additional opportunity for an exchange of at least three months in a European country.

The high school supports the students of the partner school Lucy Memorial School in Nigeria .
