history

High School Siegburg Alleestraße (August 2016)

The school was founded in 1861 by citizens of the city of Siegburg with state approval as the first secondary school for girls. The school was administered by a board of trustees made up of wealthy citizens. Since the members of the Board of Trustees could not agree on the financing, the plan to build their own schoolhouse was discarded and the school was housed in a private house belonging to the Rolffs family . The school stayed there until the building was badly damaged by bombing during World War II in 1945 . In 1872 the previously private secondary school for girls became the responsibility of the city of Siegburg, until it became a lyceum through the reorganization of the secondary school system for girls in 1914 . In 1940 this was then expanded into a grammar school. Two years later, the first Abitur took place there. Due to the aftermath of the war, the school was housed in the buildings of the municipal high school (today: Anno-Gymnasium ) and began teaching there again in weekly rotation in 1946. In order to end the temporary shift lessons, the city decided in 1950 to build a new school and organized a competition for it. Two architects from Marienheide began construction work in the spring of 1952. The new 15.75 meter high school building was divided into four construction phases and completed after twelve years. Light-flooded, round pavilion classes as an architectural implementation of modern educational ideas, derived from the democratic principles of the young Federal Republic, had emerged. The use of a lot of glass as a sign of transparency, and round classrooms facing each other as a symbol for equality, tolerance and cooperation between teachers and students should underline the modernity of the building. This harmonious architecture led to the fact that the building was celebrated as the most modern school building in Europe in 1954. Ten years later, on the city's 900th anniversary, the auditorium, which was also intended to be the city hall, was inaugurated. Because of the showroom attached to the outside of the new building, which is filled with aquariums, the name "Backfischaquarium" is popular for the construction of the girls' school. This has been a listed building since 1989 . In 1973 boys and girls were taught together for the first time. 20 years after the introduction of co-education, the school received three additional extensions and in 1996 the French-German, bilingual branch of the grammar school was introduced. In 2011, the Siegburg Alleestraße (GSA) high school received an extension with a cafeteria and additional class and subject rooms. The GSA is also active in the field of literature and music through its OLEE choir, which was founded in 1985 and consists of high school students, teachers and alumni. In addition to smaller performances, they have produced a large theater and music project every year since 1990. The original building is now a listed building.

School profile

In the classic sense, the Siegburg Alleestraße (GSA) high school is a modern language-oriented school. The school places particular emphasis on the following areas:

  • Languages: English is continued as the first foreign language in grade 5. There is also the option of adding French bilingually or opting for the bilingual German-French branch. From grade 6 onwards, students have a choice between French or Latin. In grade 8 you can choose between Latin and Spanish. Spanish can also be taken as a new foreign language in the introductory phase (EF), i.e. grade 10. In addition to the Cambridge Proficiency Certificate (CAE), an internationally recognized English language certificate that can be acquired in upper secondary level , and / or the DELF , an internationally recognized French language certificate, the GSA also offers the CertiLingua qualification. The CertiLingua label of excellence is awarded to students who, in addition to a high level of foreign language skills, have also demonstrated bilingual subject-specific skills and international skills.
  • Bilingual German-French branch: In this profile class, introduced in 1996, students intensively learn conversation in French in at least five hours a week. From grades 7 to 9, the subjects geography, history and politics are added one after the other in French. In addition, as one of 13 AbiBac schools in North Rhine-Westphalia , the GSA offers its students the opportunity to acquire the French Baccalauréat in addition to the German Abitur . The French lessons are supplemented by an exchange program with the GSA's partner school, the Collège Albert Camus in Moulins-lès-Metz . In addition to the exchange program for France , the GSA also offers an exchange program to Poland . There is also a school partnership after Abarakan in Africa .
  • Musical profile: The core aspect of the music profile introduced in the 2011/12 school year is the GSA's music class. They have several hours of music lessons per week. They learn a new instrument or continue an already chosen one. The students receive instrumental lessons at the Engelbert-Humperdinck -Musikschule, the cooperation partner of the GSA. All students in the music class take part in concerts. You play in various ensembles , including four orchestras, three choirs and two bands. Participants in the music class have in the secondary level, the ability to play music as a  credit course to choose or to seize a vocal or instrumental practical basic course. The annual concerts include an Advent and a summer concert in which all of the school's ensembles perform, the Alleefestival and the regular concerts of the OLEE Choir.
  • MINT focus: In order to strengthen support in the mathematical and scientific field, students are familiarized with the computer as early as the test level. The  ITG subject  lays the technical foundations. These can then be  deepened in the subject of  computer science from grade 8 or in the upper level in the elective area as a basic or advanced course. In addition, all  MINT subjects can  be selected as advanced courses. Nutrition can also be taken as an elective or Abitur subject at the GSA. A special feature is the large, school-owned teaching kitchen equipped with several hotplates, which enables in-house catering for school events. Since the 2016/17 school year, a new subject "Geography-Physics" has been established in the differentiation area of the intermediate level. It deals with the evaluation of satellite data with regard to geographic issues from weather to natural disasters. In cooperation with the remote sensing working group of the Geographical Institute of the University of Bonn, new learning modules and online tools are being tested. Science lessons are complemented by regular participation in competitions such as the Chemistry and Biology Olympiad , the Computer Science Beaver , the Math Olympiad and the Kangaroo Competition . Scientific excursions a. a. to the Holy Sea near Ibbenbüren and collaborations with extracurricular institutions such as the University of Bonn or the Bayer student laboratories complete the teaching units.

Working groups (AGs)

In order to invest more time in the personal development of the students, the GSA has leisure-time educational offers in the area of working groups . These cover the areas of music, sport, art, craft, natural sciences as well as culture and social affairs.

This includes:

Due to the cooperation of the GSA with various local associations, for example in the field of sport and music , extracurricular activities can be counted as a working group in order to relieve the students of the time.
