The Städtische Gymnasium Rheinbach ( SGR ) is the only municipal grammar school in Rheinbach near Bonn and one of two grammar schools in the city. Founded in 1852, it is the oldest school in Rheinbach and one of the oldest grammar schools in the Bonn area.

history

Old building of the Rheinbach municipal high school

In 1852 a higher educational institution was founded in Rheinbach. It was expanded into a Progymnasium in 1874 , i. H. a grammar school that does not offer all grades. In 1909, under the Mayor of Rheinbach, Karl Commeßmann (1897-1926), the school was expanded into a full high school. The new building at today's location on Königsberger Straße was moved into in 1976. A cafeteria is attached to the school building.

School profile

Foreign language teaching

English lessons are given from grade 5, French lessons or optionally Latin lessons (from school year 2017/2018) from grade 6. From the eighth grade onwards, the subject Latin can be taken, from 2020/2021 Spanish. Four-hour Spanish lessons can be chosen from grade 10. English can be taken as an advanced course subject in the upper level. An advanced course in French is set up at irregular intervals if there are enough interested parties.

The school offers bilingual lessons in English in the lower secondary level . After two additional hours of English per week in the fifth and sixth grades, the social sciences geography, history and politics are taught in English in grades 7 to 9. In the meantime, biology is also taught in the bilingual branch in individual modules from grade 5 in English.

The SGR maintains exchange programs with four foreign schools, whose participating students usually travel to the partner school for seven days: An English exchange is carried out with the Coopers' Company and Coborn School in Upminster, England (East London ). Since 2002 there has been an exchange in English with the Branch of Beijing No. 15 Middle School . There is a French exchange with the Lycée Mariette in Boulogne-sur-Mer on the English Channel ( Département Pas-de-Calais ), in which ninth graders take part.

In 2016, the SGR was awarded the Certi-Lingua Certificate of Excellence for its language profile.

Cooperation in natural sciences and business

The SGR cooperates with the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in the fields of physics and chemistry as well as in the context of study orientation. The school offers working groups in robotics and scientific experimentation . Since 2017 the school has been an official partner of the BWI company, with which it cooperates in the IT sector.

In the field of economics, the grammar school also offers the subject of social sciences with an economic focus. Practical relevance is guaranteed through cooperation with companies such as BMW , Kreissparkasse , Procter & Gamble , Raiffeisenbank and Materialzentrum Rheinbach GmbH. In school lessons, projects such as a start-up competition or a stock market game are carried out.

social commitment

From grade 8 onwards, students can be trained for the student medical service, which is available during lessons, breaks and school events. A working group enables schoolchildren of the same age to be trained as mediators for conflicts between schoolchildren.

The Togo social project for a school in Togo is being pursued across classes , for which the students primarily collect funds. A student council takes care of everyday school issues and is elected by the students themselves.

Further activities and offers

Schoolchildren in grades 5 to 7 can be looked after in the afternoons by the Carpe Diem parents' initiative . A new canteen built in 2012 ensures healthy meals for the students. The care is financially supported by state grants and a parental contribution.

Organized in working groups, there are three choirs, two orchestras, two rock bands and one big band at the SGR. Other working groups are dedicated to sound and lighting technology, voice training and media as well as (for younger students) theater. Sports working groups are offered for sports from football and tennis to golf and climbing. In addition, a China AG is offered including a China exchange.

The school describes free work as an "important element" of the test level (5th and 6th grade), which takes two hours per week in class 5 and one hour per week in class 6. It has a ten-year tradition at the SGR and is supposed to make the transition from elementary school to high school easier for students. In the course of optimizing individual support, this concept has been replaced by so-called IDA and FRIDA courses (individual and free individual work).

In 2015, the SGR was recognized as a reference school in the NRW Future Schools network for its numerous educational projects and collaborations. It is also a CertiLingua excellence school.
