Hank Levine (born June 29, 1965 as Hans-Werner Maria Stumpf in Bonn ), bourgeois since 1996 Hans-Werner Maria Levy, is a German producer , director and writer of documentaries and feature films. He is also a photographer and DJ .

Live and act

Levine spent the first years of his life in Hennef (Sieg) . When he was 11 years old, his father committed suicide . Levine lived for several years in his Großeltern.1985 he put the Abitur and studied first few semesters of law in Marburg . In 1988 he studied economics in Bonn and from 1990 at the Free University of Berlin , where he studied journalism .

While still studying economics, he began shooting experimental short films and working as an actor in off-theaters (e.g. ACUD ). At that time he worked for the first time under the stage name "Hank Levine". He was married to Esther Levy from 1996 to 1998 and has had the real name of Hans-Werner Maria Levy since then.

From 1994 he took courses in advertising and feature film production at UCLA in Los Angeles . Between 1996 and 1999 he went to New York to film War Zone , where he converted to Judaism in 1999 . In 2000 he went to Brazil and married the producer Andrea Barata Ribeiro, with whom he has two daughters.

From 2000 to 2012 he lived in Brazil, where he worked with directors such as Fernando Meirelles , with whom he produced or co-produced Oscar-nominated documentaries such as Waste Land and feature films such as City of God . In 2002 he created an international department for o2filmes , which he headed until 2009. From 2008 to 2011 he was a partner in the production company Ginga Eleven Filmes .

In 1995 Levine founded the production company Hank Levine Film GmbH (from 2019 Hank Levine Film & Music GmbH ; HLFM), which u. a. Produced films such as War Zone and City of God, as well as music productions.

Since separating from his wife, he has been living in Spain with his new life partner.

Artistic focus

Levine's focus in his documentaries and feature films is on contemporary issues such as environmental, socio-political and societal conflicts.

In 1998 he achieved international success for the first time as a producer with the documentary War Zone, which was made over several years under the direction of Maggie Hadleigh-West . The film documents sexual aggression against women on the streets of US cities such as New York and San Francisco. This documentary had its world premiere at the Berlinale (“Forum” section).

The films Waste Land and City of God followed Ginga (2005) and Rosa Morena (2010), directed by Carlos Augusto de Oliveira, who won the Brazilian Itamaraty Award . Levine's first directorial work was the feature-length documentary Abandonados in 2011 .

It was followed by Barcelona or Barsakh . Here he accompanied a group of people in Senegal who wanted to reach the Spanish coast 2000 km away on simple fishing boats. Also Exodus - The Long Road (2017) deals with migration and flight. The documentary Dialogue Earth , released in 2019, is a portrait of the artist Ulrike Arnold .
