Geistingen

Geistingen is a district of Hennef (Sieg) and used to be the main town in the area with its own parish , community and court.

First mention

Geistingen was the first place in the city of Hennef to be named in 799/800 as Geistinge in the list of names of a document collection from the 16th century. The name ending -ingen indicates a Franconian settlement.

possession

In the year 885 an abbot Heinrich von Geistingen was mentioned. He had received Geistingen from King Ludwig and donated a quarter to the Cassius-Stift Bonn .

In 1075, half of the church in Geistingen belonged to the Cassius Foundation and half to the Michaelsberg Abbey . The high and blood jurisdiction under the spell of Geistingen lay with the Count Palatine and later with the Count of Sayn .

In the second half of the 12th century, the old parish church of St. Michael was built, which fell victim to the Second World War .

In 1862 a synagogue was built between Bergstrasse and Sövener Strasse . In 1864 the special synagogue community Geistingen was founded, and in 1887 it was merged with that of Uckerath . On November 10, 1938, one day after the November pogroms , the synagogue was burned down. In 1938 all Jewish men were arrested, in 1942 all Jews were expelled from Hennef (fled or taken to extermination camps).

In 1903 the monastery Geistingen was opened, which was because of its philosophy-theological college of Pope Benedict XVI. in his autobiography "Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger - From My Life" is mentioned because he studied in the university library as a professor of theology in Bonn. It existed until 2006.

In 1951 the new Catholic Church of St. Michael was built on the walls of the old church. The builder was the Cologne cathedral builder Willi Weyres.

middle Ages

In the Sewer War Geistingen was like Hennef 1588 completely burned down. In the War of Spanish Succession in the early 18th century Geistingen was partially destroyed.

Second World War

On March 8, 1945, the center of Geistingen was destroyed by 208 four and a half hundredweight bombs. The attack cost 44 lives (civilians and foreign forced laborers ) and the church was destroyed. According to Pastor Aretz's description, the ancient tower tore (which suggests a tower of the founding church), the nave was destroyed down to the foundation walls, and the choir and transept were heavily attacked. Just one day later the Americans appeared in Geistingen and fought several days with German units on the northern bank of the Sieg.
