Kim Petras (born August 27, 1992 in Cologne ) is a German singer and songwriter who lives in Los Angeles . As a teenager, she became known worldwide through her trans identity , which she discovered and treated at an early age . At the age of 15 she began to publish her own pop songs on the Internet , later she worked as a songwriter in the USA. Since 2017 she has also appeared increasingly as a singer. In the meantime she has released two studio albums of her own and with greats like Dr. Luke , Charli XCX , Kygo and Paris Hilton worked together.

Childhood and youth

Kim Petras grew up in Uckerath and started wearing girls' clothes at the age of two. Her parents initially thought it was a phase that their child would eventually lose interest in. When she first expressed her wish to be a girl at the age of five, they reacted benevolently: her mother, who was friends with transgender people, guaranteed treatment for her when she was old enough. However, many doctors whom the family later went to see refused, calling them crazy. In 2003 they met Bernd Meyenburg at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , who was the head physician of the children's clinic at the time and who had been studying transsexuality in children and adolescents since the 1970s. He attested to her: "There is no doubt about the irreversibility of the desire [for a sex reassignment], since it has been observed continuously since early childhood."

At school, Petras was bullied because of her feminine clothes , and living in the wrong body triggered thoughts of suicide. She took refuge in the world of pop music , learned English and began to write her own songs and lyrics. From the age of 12, Petras received hormone therapy, which first stopped the development into a man associated with puberty and then initiated the development into a woman . From now on she called herself "Kim". In 2006, at the age of 13, she appeared for the first time on Stern TV with her parents and described her hormone treatment by Achim Wüsthof in Hamburg . At the age of 14 she became internationally known for the report Man or Woman? on VOX , in which she asked for an early gender reassignment operation . In November 2008, at the age of 16, Petras announced on her blog that she had undergone gender reassignment surgery. She is the youngest transsexual in the world to have been treated in this way.

In retrospect, she calls her youth “tragic, but also incredible”.

Career

Beginnings on the Internet and first successes in Germany

In 2007 Petras began to put his own singing videos online, including his own compositions. In 2008 the single Last Forever was released online and received a lot of feedback on YouTube and MySpace . In September 2008, the single Fade Away was the first time one of their songs was released commercially. Last Forever followed on April 17, 2009 as a promotion on iTunes . Her extended play One Piece of Tape was released on March 11, 2011 .

Moved to the USA and Era 1

German music labels , however, found their music “too [very] pop” and “too American”. So Petras decided in 2011 to go to Los Angeles to work as a songwriter in the local pop scene. Without money and contacts, it was difficult for her at first; According to her own statements, she slept on a studio couch and kept her head above water with commissions for compositions. It wasn't until Fergie sang one of her songs (which was never released) that she was offered a contract. She then worked with well-known producers, but was still active as a singer. In 2013 she could be heard in the singles Flight to Paris and Heartbeat by Klaas Gerling . In 2016 she founded her own music label BunHead Records .

Petras had her breakthrough as a singer in August 2017 with her song I Don't Want It at All . He reached the top of the Spotify Global Viral 50 chart, and Paris Hilton made a guest appearance in the accompanying music video . In June 2018, she appeared on the series Good Times, Bad Times . On October 1, 2018, the Halloween- inspired EP Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1 was released, on which Elvira - Ruler of Darkness also appeared as a guest singer. Since her success with I Don't Want It at All , Kim Petras has repeatedly released individual singles between 2017 and 2019, but they were never planned for a real album or an official music project. For this reason, Kim Petras referred to these singles as Era 1 (i.e. ' Era 1' or 'the first era'). This includes her hit single Heart to Break and many other songs ( Slow It Down , Can't Do Better , All the Time , 1,2,3 Dayz Up , If U Think About Me and many more). In February 2019 she called Era 1 "completed".

Turn Off the Light and Clarity

In June 2019 she released her debut album Clarity , from which (similar to her Era 1 phase) she had released several singles before the album was released, including the singles Broken , Got My Number , Blow It All , Sweet Spot , Do Me , Clarity , All I Do Is Cry , Personal Hell , Another One and Icy . Of all the songs from the album that Kim Petras had released, only Icy was considered the album's lead single. At the same time as the release, Petras performed on the Broken Tour in various cities in the USA and Europe. After the Broken Tour ended, the Clarity Tour was announced, which will run through the USA and Europe from October 21, 2019 to February 11, 2020.

At the end of September 2019, Kim Petras announced her second album, which turned out to be an extended album version of her Halloween EP Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1 , which was released in 2018 . The album Turn Off the Light was released on October 1st, 2019, exactly one year after the release of the previous EP.

style
