Carcassonne is a placement game by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede (author) and Doris Matthäus (illustration). It was published in October 2000 by Hans im Glück Verlag in Munich . The game was named after the Cité of Carcassonne , a medieval city located on a hill in the old town of Carcassonne in the south of France , whose " fortress landscape " is the theme of the game.

In 2001 Carcassonne was awarded the Game of the Year Critics' Prize and the German Game Prize. In the first ten years it has sold over six million times and has been translated into over 20 languages, making it one of the most successful family games . Due to the great success of Carcassonne, numerous expansions to the basic game, additional independent games as well as PC and console implementations have appeared over the years .

Game concept

In Carcassonne, the players create a map together by joining square cards or tiles. With game pieces (followers), the players can collect cities, streets, monasteries and meadows for themselves and receive points as soon as the respective area is completed (with the exception of the meadow, which is always evaluated after the end of the game) or the game ends because none unused playing cards are more available. After scoring the followers on the map, the winner is the player with the most points. The followers are called meeples in English - a suitcase word from my + people. Hans im Glück Verlag has been using this term for the characters since the new edition was published in 2014 at the latest .

At the beginning of the game the (given) starting card is placed in the middle of the table. All other cards are dealt face down on one or more piles. When it is a player's turn, he draws a card, shows it to his fellow players in order to get “tips” from them, places it on the existing map (which is always possible at the beginning of the game, since it is in the game There are only three different edges in total - city, street and meadow - which the start card - a half-town with a straight street - all shows) and then a follower from his stock of seven followers (an eighth serves as a pointer on the counting board) is allowed next to one Place component (district, meadow, road section or monastery) of the tile just placed by the previous player. When you create it, some of the components become part of a larger object (city, meadow or street). Depending on where it is placed, the character is named differently:

Toy figures from Carcassonne
  • Knight when in a city.
  • Highwayman when she's on a street.
  • Monk in a monastery.
  • Farmer in a meadow (is laid down and remains there until the end of the game).

When inserting the pawn it is important to note that there must be no other follower on the entire object (town, meadow or street), not even one's own. However, it can happen that several similar objects (cities, meadows or streets), which are already occupied by followers, are connected to each other by clever creation and are then occupied by several followers.

A city or street is completed when it no longer has any open edges or ends; A monastery is completed when the monastery card is completely surrounded by eight (your own or someone else's) playing cards. If a city, a street or a monastery is completed with the creation, scoring takes place immediately, and the player who owns the completed object for a henchman receives one point for each number of cards involved, i.e. nine for monasteries and two for cities Points per card (and two per depicted coat of arms per city card). If there is a situation with several followers from different players, the one with the majority wins. In the event of a tie, all players involved receive full points. All followers present there go back to their player. However, followers on meadows (farmers) are placed to make it clear that they remain there until the end of the game.

At the end of the game, unfinished cities, streets and monasteries are scored with one point per card involved. Above all, the farmers then have a great influence, because every finished town that borders on a meadow scores its owner (s) three points under majority determination analogous to the rules for towns and streets. This makes Carcassonne exciting until the very end, because the points in the final scoring can literally turn the tide at the last second.

With this in mind, players develop their strategies to generate the most points. It is very popular to take (point) possession of objects occupied by followers of the opponent (coll. Also called "Einzecken") by placing a map in the immediate vicinity of an occupied area (for example a city, in which a follower of an opponent stands) appropriately places a follower on this and in the next rounds, d. H. tries as quickly as possible to combine these objects into a single (common) object. This works with cities and streets as well as with meadows.

history

Development history

Carcassonne is the first published game by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede . In 1992 his first game Scippo was about to be published by Hexagames . However, this went bankrupt . Then Wrede tried his hand at writing books. For his research on a book on the Ghent Altarpiece , he traveled to the Carcassonne region in southern France in 1999 to study the history of the Cathars . During this trip he forged the ideas for the game that became Carcassonne . Together with the prototype for Mesopotamia , he submitted it to three publishers. Wrede found Mesopotamia better than Carcassonne and was surprised when the Hans im Glück Verlag agreed and published Carcassonne for SPIEL '00 . What success the game would have in the long term could not be foreseen for him. However, 2,000 copies of Carcassonne were already sold at the fair .

The publishing house under the direction of Bernd Brunnhofer realized that the game should be interesting for many players, because it combines puzzles with tactics. Originally, a follower should be allowed to be placed in the structures with every map created. Since HiG-Verlag found this original rule to be too offensive , Wrede was urged to delete this rule, also to encourage concentration on several locations. The number of followers was also reduced from ten to seven (in the field) in order to provoke decisions more quickly. The card type “empty meadow” was also exchanged for cards with monasteries. Otherwise no changes in the development are known.

Wrede refused expansions at first , but remembered similar requests for other games, which is why ten large and 34 mini expansions have now been released. The book, for which he originally traveled to France, was finally published in 2015.

Edition of the board game

Four different German editions of the game have now appeared. The second edition corrected the 70-square-short scoring track to a circular course and made the instructions more understandable. In the third edition (now with the imprint “Game of the Year” on the graphically modified cover) a rule of the game - the so-called “pawn rule” - has been simplified. In the fourth edition, the pawn rule was modified again. In total there are three different rules for Carcassonne. The first editions were sold with the age indication “from 10”; later the game was reduced to "from 8". In the case of the new edition , it was reduced to “from 7”. It can be played with two to five players. The first expansion, Inns and Cathedrals, adds gray followers to the original followers - in the colors blue, yellow, green, red and black - and thus allows six players to play. The Big Box Edition 2014 allows eight players to play by adding followers in pink and purple.

Extensions

Carcassonne with several extensions

Carcassonne enjoyed great and lasting demand within a very short period of time. The publisher reports that it has received a lot of feedback from players asking for more landscape cards.

The game principle remains essentially the same. Extensions primarily extend the playing time, but also allow more people to play. Large extensions are measured at around a quarter of an hour. They also introduce smaller additions, with new playing figures and new images on the cards enabling further actions. A Carcassonne game can be extended considerably with the expansions and several basic games. In general, the extensions can be combined as required. However, the effects of the expansions among each other are not sufficiently described, especially for the mini expansions.

Carcassonne special editions

The wheel of fortune

At The Wheel of Fortune is a standalone version of Carcassonne. The game contains landscape cards and followers similar to the basic game, but has been expanded to include the “wheel of fortune board” and the associated rules. The wheel of fortune board serves as a starting plan on which the landscape cards are laid out in the course of the game and which entails new actions.

Some landscape cards have symbols of the wheel of fortune with a value from 1 to 3. If such a card is drawn, the "lucky pig" moves on the wheel of fortune by the specified number to a new one of the six action spaces "Fortuna," "Taxes", "Famine" , “Storms”, “Inquisition” or “Pest”. The triggered action brings points either to all or only to the person who has just moved, or followers must be recorded. Instead of placing a follower on the field, one can be placed on the crown fields of the wheel of fortune. If the pig moves to this space, you receive the corresponding points displayed.

The version can be combined with both Carcassonne expansions and the basic game. It is also included in the 2014 Big Box Edition .

The cards are printed with a small spoked wheel for separation for games without certain extensions.

The game was published in Germany in a special special edition and is delivered together with the novel Carcassonne - Das Schicksalsrad by Helene Luise Köppel and signed by the author and game designer Klaus-Jürgen Wrede.

Carcassonne anniversary

As part of the tenth anniversary in 2011, a basic game in a new design, the mini-expansion The Entourage and Carcassonne - The Dice Game were brought onto the market.

The anniversary edition of the basic game was released on March 15, 2011. In addition to the familiar cards from the basic game, it also includes figures made of transparent plastic and the mini expansion Das Fest . The packaging and scoring bar are in the shape of a follower.

Big box editions

The Big Box Editions are a compilation of the basic game with several expansions. The boxes are designed in such a way that all cards of an extension have a corresponding place in the box and thus overall more order is possible in the packaging. There are now six different big box editions. The 2014 edition is the only official way to play Carcassonne with up to eight players. The 2017 edition appeared for the first time in the design of the new edition . For a detailed list of the different Big Box editions, see the relevant section: Comparison of the different editions .

Special publishing editions

Various publishers that sell Carcassonne outside of Germany brought out their own compilations similar to the big box editions.

Rio Grande Games

In 2003, before the Big Box editions appeared , Rio Grande Games brought out the English-language limited edition in gold-colored packaging the size of the basic game. In addition to the basic game, it contains the first two expansions: taverns and cathedrals , traders and builders as well as the mini expansion The River .

The Big Box Edition (2006) distributed by Rio Grande Games also included the mini expansion The River II .

Lautapelit

The Finnish publisher Lautapelit brought out the Edition Kreivi ja Kuningas ( German  Graf und König ) in 2006 . This consists of the basic game and the three mini-expansions King and Scout , The River II and The Count of Carcassonne . The second edition of this edition corresponds to the content of the 6th extension Graf, König und Konsorten , but is sold as the fifth extension, while the Finnish 6th extension Kärryt ja Kartanot ( German  Karren und Gutshöfe ) corresponds to the German 5th extension Abbey and Mayor . The other major expansions correspond to the usual counting method.

hobby world

The Russian publisher hobby world has so far published the following own editions:

  • 2012, from published The Fortune and the eighth extension (bridges, castles and bazaars) existing Edition Колесо фортуны ( German  Wheel of Fortune ).
  • The 2011 edition Предместья и обитатели ( German  suburbs and residents ) consists of the basic game and the first two, the fifth expansion and the mini expansion King and Scout . In 2013 this compilation was reissued under the name Королевский Подарок ( German  Royal Gift ) in a larger package.
  • In addition, the Carcassonne edition Дворяне и Башни ( German  nobles and towers ) was released, consisting of the base game, the third and fourth expansion and the three mini-expansion: The Crop Circles , The Cult Place and The River II .
  • In addition to the various basic game editions, the extension Наука и магия ( German  science and magic ) was released. It includes all seven mini extensions of the Carcassonne Minis in the packaging of a large extension .

Other editions

In addition, editions have been published that were exclusively sold separately by one dealer:

Travel Carcassonne

The travel version of the basic game, released in 2007, is characterized by smaller landscape tiles and game figures. Like the basic game, it contains 72 landscape tiles and six pieces each in five colors. The size of the landscape cards has been reduced from 45 mm to 35 mm edge length. A printed cloth bag serves as a counting strip.

Carcassonne for 2

In September 2017 a new edition of the Reise-Carcassonnes appeared for two players in a small metal box. It is designed in the New Edition design, contains six small game figures for each player in the colors blue and red as well as 48 small landscape tiles. However, these are designed differently; Both cards from the first expansion and newly designed ones are included. With its 35 mm cards and the new design, it is similar to the Carcassonne demo game for two players that was released in 2015 . However, this only includes 20 cards and 2 × 4  meeples .

The gingerbread man (mini expansion)

This expansion, which can only be played together with the Carcassonne Winter Edition, consists of six landscape cards and a new character - the gingerbread man. On the new landscape cards there is a small, brown gingerbread man to identify them. If such a card is drawn, the player places the wooden figure of the gingerbread man in another, unfinished city. When leaving the gingerbread man, each player receives one point for each knight standing in this city. When completing a city in which the gingerbread man is currently, each knight receives one point for each tile that belongs to this city.

The crop circles (mini expansion)

In Advent 2015 frostedgames were 24 mini extensions for 24 different board games and placement games (u. A. For Settlers of Catan , Zooloretto , The Castles of Burgundy and Colt Express ), including December 23, six landscape tiles according to the mini expansion The crop circles for the winter edition.

In 2014, a redesigned version of the base game was released. The rules have been revised and the landscape tiles redesigned to make access even easier for newcomers. It contains the two mini-expansions The River and The Abbot and the recommended gaming age has been reduced from "8+" to "7+" years. This version is also known as Carcassonne II or Carcassonne 2.0 .

The graphics of the New Edition and its extensions no longer come from Doris Matthäus , who designed almost all other Carcassonne variants and extensions, but from Anne Pätzke . It already illustrated the 2012 winter edition and its extensions.

At the end of 2015, the first extension in the design of this revised version appeared; The second, third, fifth and fourth extensions in the new design followed in 2016 (named chronologically). The sixth expansion was reissued in March 2017 . In contrast to the original edition, the characters for the sixth player are no longer gray, but pink. A game of seven or eight, as with the Big Box Edition 2014 and its additional characters in the colors “pink” and “purple”, is (so far) not possible with the New Edition .

The new edition also appeared in a special version, primarily produced for specialist retailers, which, in addition to the mini expansions The River and The Abbot, also includes a modified version of Das Fest . This version, published at the end of 2016, will only be included in the Hans im Glück Verlag shop one year later.

Carcassonne demo game

In 2015 a demo version in the design of the New Edition was presented. This is intended to make the game known to people who are not yet familiar with it and thus enable an easy introduction. It comprises only 20 landscape tiles and only four red and four blue followers in contrast to the 72 landscape tiles and the 40 followers (8 × 5 colors) of the basic game. The cards and also the followers are smaller than those of the basic game and therefore cannot be played with this or the extensions. At 35 mm × 35 mm, the size of the cards corresponds to that of the Reise-Carcassonne . The meadow rules were waived here; one can only put one's followers on the roads or in the cities. The scoring track is also missing.

It is currently only available for "Carcassonne on Tour" events. The Dutch version of the game was included in the 25-year gift box from 999 Games .

As early as 2012, the Polish publisher of the game released a demo version of the game in its original design called Wersja demonstracyjna . However, this did not consist of the classic plates, but these had to be cut out of a sheet. The monasteries are also missing here, otherwise it is similar to the demo version from 2015, but with 48 tiles it has significantly more than this.

Standalone games based on Carcassonne

Due to the great success of the Carcassonne original variant, there are, in addition to the many extensions, also independent games based on the Carcassonne game principle. These games mostly use the same mechanism as the original game with modified and different rules.

Computer games

Carcassonne and Die Jäger und Collector were implemented for the Windows PC by the Ukrainian software company Meridian '93 on behalf of the publisher Koch Media . Meanwhile, the first and second expansion of the board game also exist in a common computer game expansion for the PC implementation of Carcassonne . In 2005 Koch Media lost the license to sell a PC version to Microsoft. That changed in 2011, so that a PC implementation developed by Deep Silver is available again. The Deep Silver version has not been playable online since 2019, the server has been switched off for technical reasons. Asmodee Digital offers a version for several platforms (Android, iOS, Windows and Nintendo Switch)

There are also implementations as browser games , including in the board game world and the board game arena.

An implementation of Carcassonne for Xbox Live Arcade can be downloaded for a fee and has a USK approval of 0 years. The game can also be played online against players from all over the world. Various levels of difficulty can be set.

Deep Silver was able to secure an implementation license for handheld consoles and offered a version of the game for the Nintendo DS from October 23, 2009 . The game has a PEGI-3 approval and is designed both as a single and as a multiplayer system. There are also campaigns in which the player has to solve special tasks. Scoring and playing style are the same as in the original. In the meantime (April 2020) the version is no longer available.

There are also variants for Apple iOS devices, Android devices, Windows phone devices, Windows 8 (as Windows app ), Blackberry smartphones, Java phones and Nintendo Switch .

Championships

German championships

The German championships in Carcassonne have been held annually since 2003 on the international match days in Essen. The organizers are the Herne games center, Hans im Glück Verlag and Schmidt Spiele . Until 2006 there was no separate world championship, the German championship was called the international championship, as individual international players were allowed to participate. The basic game is played without any extensions.

qualification

To participate in the championship, qualification and ranking tournaments are held. In qualifying tournaments, the winner is automatically entitled to participate in the German championship. Each player can only take part in one qualifying tournament per year. In ranked tournaments, players collect points for a ranking list. Each player can take part in any number of tournaments. The best players on the ranking also qualify for the final in Essen. The number depends on the free places that are still to be allocated.

mode

Six rounds of Carcassonne are played in the Swiss system . A table is formed from which the first four players go to the semi-finals. 1st place in the table plays against 4th place, 2nd place against 3. Then the winners will play the final and the losers the game for 3rd place. One game is always played ( best of one ).

Since 2017, five games have been played in the preliminary round, followed by the eight best players in the quarter-finals. The remaining games are decided in knockout mode.

reception

At the beginning, the demand at the game publisher Hans im Glück was very high at the start of sales with an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 and rose sharply after the award for game of the year. In the first year alone it was sold around 700,000 times in Germany. Due to its success, the game was translated into 25 languages by 2015 and sold over 10 million times worldwide. In addition to the actual game, the publisher also sells merchandise such as earrings, stickers, baking and ice cube molds or T-shirts . The Carcassonne series accounts for around 80% of publishing sales.

Reception of the basic game

The game was received mostly positively to very positively. The simplicity of the game and the mixture of tactics and strategy on the one hand and a certain luck factor on the other were praised . Therefore, the game has received several awards, including from the game of the year association . A list of other awards is given in the corresponding chapter .

“CARCASSONNE is a flawless tactical placement game in which a landscape with cities, monasteries, meadows and streets [sic] is built. Each time - and this is one of the charms of this game - the result is different: once the cities are close to each other, once they are more on the edge of the field, once there are few large cities, and sometimes the players prefer to build a series of small towns. The road network is similar, once with many intersections, then again with rather long streets. This also indirectly means that CARCASSONNE takes a different course depending on the tactical considerations of the other players. This gives the game a very high level of repetition. One of CARCASSONNE's particular strengths is that the number of people involved does not matter. "

- Game of the year e. V .: Prize winners archive

Michael Knopf from spielbox describes the game as "basically a very simple, spontaneously accessible game that even the toughest player does not accuse of simplicity or a level close to the ground". Also, small mistakes are not immediately destructive and "small successes regularly come". It is "weighty enough to serve professionals as a legitimate break-filler, and it is so easy that laypeople can experience the appeal of the game with it". He also notes that the farmers are a lobby that should not be underestimated. Especially in the end they caused a big stir. In addition, the question always arises as to whether one should already complete the structures in order to have followers free for new projects or to receive the full points. The tactic is best for two. The more you play, the more you have to come to terms with the cards you draw.

Reception of the extensions

Right from the start, the question arises about the meaning and use of the extensions, but also the offshoots. The publisher has received letters asking for more material on Carcassonne . In an interview with Michael Knauf, publisher Bernd Brunnhofer said shortly after the appearance of Die Jäger und Collector that a publisher had to make a profit because not all of the publisher's games were self-sufficient, which is why other games in the Carcassonne series are published. The argument is also made that demand is being met and the games are being enthusiastically received. Moritz Brunnhofer, the son of the publisher's founder, also wants to maintain product maintenance because "the relationship between effort and benefit [...] is better".

The more cards there are in play, the more likely that you will draw an unfavorable one. Cristward Conrad writes that "there is no doubt that a number of encores have their right to exist", "they are actually not useful for the game". He also writes that it is up to you whether you want to play the basic game alone, with a few or all of the extensions. Any ambiguities in the rules would then have to be accepted. He also suspects that (2010) the possibilities for possible extensions will certainly continue for another 10 years.

Overall, the seventh major expansion is the most controversial expansion. Christwart Conrad writes about the update of the expansion reviews: “THE CATAPULT falls completely outside the scope of the usual expansion. [...] Five points are also awarded for 'catching'. With this version, the entire table display becomes a side show. [...] Opinions are divided on this variant at the latest. It is a horror for the ambitious tactician […]. Others are only now really getting into the party mood and have a great time with this variation. "

Trivia

From September 8th to 10th, 2006, 26 players laid out 4,194 Carcassonne tiles in 42 hours and 48 minutes and made it into the Guinness Book of Records with the “Longest Boardgame Marathon” (volume 2008, p. 64). A plate was placed on average every 36.74 seconds. The area used was 15.36 m² (4.80 m × 3.20 m). The venue for this event was the municipal game center in Herne. The record was also won by "The Book of Alternative Records" in the Carcassonne Continuous Games category; Record: 25 hours and 2 minutes recorded. The reduced time is due to stricter break regulations.

On the box of the first edition (still without the “ Spiel des Jahres ” logo), a figure can be seen at the bottom right that resembles the robber baron made up of a king and a scout . A woman is depicted there in later editions; the robber baron can now be seen in the bushes on the left. In later editions it can no longer be seen on the packaging. It can still be seen on the packaging of the Big Box Edition 2010, but not on the packaging from 2012.

Carcassonne and geocaching

Since the expansion of Die Windrosen , Carcassonne has referred to the outdoor hobby of geocaching . It says on the extension's website: "The Geo Cachers have invaded Carcassonne!"

On the occasion of the exhibition model-hobby-spiel 2013 the organizers initiated in collaboration with the publishers Hans in Luck and Schmidt Games accordingly GPS - scavenger hunt . 99  meeples were u. a. in the United States, "in China, Poland, the Czech Republic, France, Austria" and Germany, in order to bring them from there by fans of the game and by geocachers as travel bugs from "hide to hide" to the Leipzig trade fair . 14 meeples arrived in time for the start of the event. This was repeated in 2015.
