Alhambra or The Palace of Alhambra is a board / placement game by Dirk Henn for two to six players, published by Queen Games in 2003 and named Game of the Year in the same year .

In the first edition the game was called "Alhambra". From the second edition it was published as "The Palace of Alhambra" due to the similarity of name with another game that had already been published in Switzerland in 1997.

The game, developed under the editorial responsibility of Bernd Dietrich, is based on the board / card game Stimmen so published by Queen Games in 1998 , which in turn was a revised new edition of Al Capone , published in 1992 by Dirk Henn .

Gameplay

The aim of the game is to achieve as many victory points as possible by displaying square cards ( buildings ) in your Alhambra . The building cards must be purchased beforehand with play money cards in four different currencies. In each turn the player has the choice of getting money, buying and building or rebuilding the Alhambra. The expansions add further options.

The special attraction of the game results from the combination of different game elements:

  • When buying a building you can make up to five moves if you pay accordingly.
  • The building cards have partially solid edges ( walls ). In the Alhambra, walls are only allowed to border walls.
  • An outer wall of the Alhambra that is as long as possible is awarded in the ratings, which, however, limits the possibilities for further expansion.
  • The timing of the first two of three ratings cannot be precisely foreseen.

Extensions

The 1st extension - the favor of the vizier

It supplements the original game with four rules:

  • Wesirstein: Allowing a move to buy and build, even if it is not your turn
  • Bauhütten: Adjacent buildings of the same color are upgraded
  • Exchange offices: You can also pay in two currencies
  • Bonus cards: Corresponding building values are doubled

The 2nd expansion - the gates of the city

It also gives the game four new options:

  • City gates: allow building where city walls were previously in the way.
  • Camp: Add one point to all of the following building tiles on the marked side of the part
  • Diamonds: Replace any other currency when buying, but cannot be used in combination as a kind of wild card.
  • Character cards: can be bought at auction and have different abilities

The 3rd expansion - The hour of the thieves

The third expansion again contains four new expansion options:

  • Thieves: Allow the player to take a banknote out of turn (similar to the vizier stones in the first expansion)
  • Walls: allow walls to be built separately to fill gaps in the city wall
  • Change: Change brings back coins if you don't pay properly
  • Flying traders: They bring you special points if you build the right building for them

The 4th expansion - the caliph's treasury

This extension also contains four options:

  • Treasure Chamber: Contains treasures that earn additional points
  • Master builder cards : make it easier to renovate the Alhambra or add more money
  • Attackers: Attack the palace and lead u. U. to deduct victory points
  • Bazaars: Score additional victory points in the last scoring

The 5th Expansion - The Power of the Sultan

This extension also contains four options:

  • The arts of the Moors: reward the purchase of expensive buildings with additional victory points.
  • The caravanserai: provides the necessary change to pay appropriately.
  • The new scoring cards : mix up the fixed value of the building types.
  • The power of the sultan: allows targeted access to certain buildings.

Mini extensions

  • The magical buildings will only be handed in on the International Game Days and introduce six new buildings, which are designated as “magical” and which can be rotated at any time to make mooring easier.
  • Another mini extension is called "Medina" or "Queenie 2: Medina". This expansion was probably also intended for the international game days, but like "The Magic Buildings" it is also sold via Amazon and also by Queen Games. There are 9 new building tiles here; the medinas. Depending on the number of these in your own Alhambra, there is a certain number of minus points for each rating, provided you have the fewest of them.

The 6th extension - the falconers

This extension also contains four options:

  • The falconers: Can be built between four buildings of the same color.
  • The building site: reserve the building for half the purchase price.
  • The bill of exchange: Use change for later purchases.
  • The portals: extend the city walls

Stand-alone games from the Alhambra series

Alhambra - The dice game

Alhambra - The dice game is the dice game variant of Alhambra and was published by Queen in October 2006 . It was also developed by Dirk Henn and is designed for two to six players.

The dice game can be played either as an independent game or as a variation with the basic game. Buildings are not bought here, but earned with a double. However, the dice do not have numbers, but building symbols. At the end of each round it is evaluated who could achieve the best dice results.

In the basic variant, only the buildings earned are counted. In combination with the basic game, each player builds his own Alhambra according to the building and evaluation rules of the basic game. The combination of the dice game with the extensions is not meaningful.

The graphic design of the gardens and the theme are based on the bestseller Alhambra .

The buildings are laid out on the board at the beginning of the game. Little by little, the garden tiles are drawn by the players and placed on the buildings. As soon as all four sides of a building are surrounded by garden tiles, the game is scored. The aim is to have the majority of the plants in their own color.
