Game of the Year 1979 |
Rabbit and Hedgehog is a board game that simulates a race. The game works without dice , the strategic elements outweigh the few luck influences caused by the event cards. It was invented in 1973 by the Englishman David Parlett . 1974 was of Intellect Games as Hare and Tortoise ( Hare and Tortoise published) in the UK. In 1978 Ravensburger published the family game in Germany. In 1979 it was the first game to be awarded the Game of the Year award. Over 2 million copies have now been sold in 10 languages. In 2000 Abacusspiele brought out a new German edition as Hase & Igel . The game has become a classic of board games not only in Germany .
regulate
The players represent rabbits with their playing figures. Each rabbit who runs along has 68 carrots or 98 carrots for five or more players and three salads as food in the form of cards and can decide for himself which field he wants to hop on. The salads must be "eaten" on the way in so-called salad fields and at the end you are only allowed to bring a certain number of carrots to the finish.
The main thing in the game is paying for the train distance, which consumes more carrots the further you hop. A hop of three fields costs 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 carrots, a hop of four fields costs 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 carrots. So that you don't have to do a lot of math, each player receives a race card on which the costs have already been calculated. To compensate and to get carrot food back, you can move backwards onto so-called hedgehog fields , which is 10 times the number of fields in carrots. The prediction of the correct own position in the race also brings carrots in certain position fields.
There is a little luck in the rabbit fields . There you draw an event card that brings positive and negative events with it.
Victory conditions
The first rabbit to reach the target field wins. However, he is then not allowed to carry a salad or more than ten carrots with him. So if you have collected too much on the way, you can rest (stop) in certain fields and eat ten carrots at a time. Another way to get rid of excess beets is to retreat to a hedgehog field for a long time. You get additional food, but the big jump to the goal then consumes more than the previously acquired.
Changes in the new edition
The Abacusspiele publisher has made some changes in the new edition with regard to the field placement and the rabbit card rules . Due to the now much lower random factor , the game is characterized even more by tactics and strategy .
