history

The Abacusspiele publishing house was founded on June 1, 1989 by Matthias Senke and Joe Nikisch in Dreieich near Frankfurt am Main. At that time, Joe Nikisch was also the managing director of Amigo and until 1990 product manager at Hexagames . One of the publisher's first games was the game of skill pirate billiards . As early as 1990, Abacus achieved first place in the German Games Prize with the game Big Potatoes by Doris Matthäus and Frank Nestel with 10th place .

In 1990 a graphic designer was brought to Abacus and the private company was converted into a KG. In 1994 Matthias Senke left the company and from 1996 Joe Nikisch was the sole owner of Abacusspiele. In 1994 Volle Lotte was the first of the series of cards and dice games that is still successful today. In 1998 Anno Domini was added to the program by Urs Hostettler and in 1999 Mamma Mia by Uwe Rosenberg was included on the shortlist for Game of the Year .

In 2003 Abacusspiele began working with Michael Schacht and brought his game Coloretto onto the market. The successor, Zooloretto , was presented at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in 2007 ; In the same year, the game was the winner of the game of the year and took 5th place in the German Games Prize. In 2013 the card game Hanabi by Antoine Bauza was able to assert itself as Game of the Year and in 2014 the game Leo must go to the hairdresser by Leo Colovini was nominated as Children's Game of the Year .
