Party Bugs is a card game by the Italian game designer Martino Chiacchiera that was published by Abacusspiele in 2018 .

Theme and equipment

Party Bugs is a card game in which up to six players have to try to get as few points as possible from a card display by forming pairs. Thematically it is about a costume party of cockroaches.

The game material consists of six card sets of 13 cards each of different colors with the values 1 to 13, on which the different cockroaches are depicted, a tie card (sleepy mouse), a mirror card and a disco ball.

Style of play

To prepare for the game, the disco ball is placed in the middle of the table and each player receives a set of 13 cards with the same colored back. The card sets are shuffled and each placed as a face-down draw pile in front of the other players. The top card in each case is placed face up on the disc ball (on the dance floor), then each player takes the following three cards as cards in hand. The player who placed the lowest card on the dance floor receives the tie card, which he places face up in front of him.

The game goes over 13 rounds according to the number of cards. In the first 12 rounds, each player always chooses one of his three hand cards and places it face down in front of him, then all selection cards are turned up at the same time. The player who played the card with the lowest value starts by choosing a card on the dance floor, exchanging it for the card he played and placing it face up in his personal display. Then the other players follow in the order of their card values. If several players have the same card values, the one who is closest in clockwise direction to the player with the tie card begins. If a player plays the “Party King”, ie the card with the value 13, he takes all three cards on display and adds them to his display, all other players receive no cards and simply put their cards on the dance floor accordingly. After their moves, all players draw a card from their draw pile.

The players try to get as few points as possible in their personal display. Whenever you can create a pair of two identical card values (and images) from a newly received card in your display, you can remove these two cards from the game. After the last round, the players have no more cards in hand, but must deal out the cards that are still on display. The player to the left of the player with the tie card is the first to choose a card from the dance floor, the others follow in clockwise order.

The game ends after the 13th round and the player who has the fewest points in his display wins the game. In the event of a tie, the player closest to the player with the tie card, clockwise, wins.

Game for two

In a game for two, the rules are slightly modified by a dummy player playing along and being given his own set of cards. The dummy player's cards are drawn directly from the face-down deck and he is always the last player to act. The "party king" of the dummy does not trigger any special offers.

variants

The rules of the game show two variants for the game:

  1. At the start of the game, the players receive four cards in hand and may choose one of them, which they place face down in their display. If you can form a pair with this card in the course of the game, it is removed from the game.
  2. The game is played over as many rounds as there are other players. The last loser with the highest number of points receives a mirror card and puts it on his display. He can use this card as a joker to form a pair from a number card and the mirror card.

Blind date

The "Blind Date" cards printed as a mini extension on the back of the 2018 catalog from Abacus Verlag can be added to the game. Pairs of two different numerical values are shown on these cards. At the beginning of the game, each player is dealt one of these cards face down and may use it once in the game to remove a pair from the game as shown.
