Awards

Just One is a cooperative communication game by the French game designers Ludovic Roudy and Bruno Sautter , which was published by Belgian publisher Repos Production in autumn 2018 . Just One was awarded the Game of the Year 2019 Critics' Prize and was ranked 9th in the German Game Prize .

Theme and equipment

In Just One many secret words as possible should be guessed. In each round, a player has to find out the given words based on the clues given by the others, whereby clues that are duplicated are removed.

In addition to instructions, the game material consists of 110 cards with the secret terms as well as seven pens and wipeable information boards.

Style of play

As with other cooperative games, a team is formed. At the beginning the cards with the secret terms are shuffled, 13 of these are counted and placed face down in the middle of the table. Each player receives a notice board and a pen. If there are only three players, each player receives two boards. Then a starting player is determined.

In each game round a player has to guess a term on one of the cards. He draws the top card and, without looking at it, places it on his board so that all other players can read it. He then says a number between 1 and 5 to determine the word to guess. All other players must now write a word on their board as a hint without talking to each other or otherwise coordinating. Numbers or symbols are also permitted as words, but no words with the same root word, translations of the word to be guessed, other spellings of the same word or invented words are allowed. When all players have written down their words, the terms are compared and the active player has to close his eyes. All identical or invalid clues are removed from the round and covered by tilting the board. Then the active player opens his eyes and tries to guess the term he is looking for using the open clues. He only has one try for it.

When the active player has guessed the term he was looking for, the card is placed face up next to the draw pile. If he does not succeed, it is removed from the game along with the next card from the draw pile. If the card with an unsuccessful attempt was the last card in the pile, an already won card is removed in addition to it. If a player does not want to guess at all, he can sit out and take the active card out of play.

The game ends when the draw pile is empty and no more question cards can be drawn. The team counts the cards won and evaluates the result according to the game instructions: the more cards you win, the better the result.

reception

The Just One game was developed by game authors Ludovic Roudy and Bruno Sautter and published in several languages by Repos Production in 2018 .

The game received positive reviews on multiple platforms. The game critic Wieland Herold rates the game with its second highest rating "Gladly again tomorrow" and Udo Bartsch describes the game as "appealing" in his blog "Reviews for Millions". Harald Schrapers compares it with the classic Codenames : In comparison, Just One goes faster and proves to be far less complicated for funny beginners' rounds and guarantees a lot of fun. "When a teammate thinks around three corners with a term and this is exactly what leads to success, or if the word is not guessed because nobody dares to say the obvious, these are pure emotions", Tim Koch emphasizes the quality.

In July 2019, Just One was named the Game of the Year 2019 after being nominated together with the games Lama and Werworths . The jury justifies its assessment as follows:

“Just One is particularly brilliant because of its simplicity. It stands out because it develops a tremendous pull: If you play it in public, you will quickly attract onlookers who would like to play along right away. And they often do that too, because the entry barrier is so low that anyone can overcome it without any problems. A brainstorm of communicative joy in playing that hits every round and leaves a lasting impression. "

In September 2019, the game was also voted 9th in the German Game Prize .
