Pictures is a creative guessing game by Christian and Daniela Stöhr that was published by PD-Verlag in 2019 and by Rio Grande Games in English-speaking countries . The game is about players recreating a given picture and others having to guess it. The players are given different materials to represent the terms.

The game was named Game of the Year in 2020 .

Theme and equipment

In Pictures is a creative guessing game in which players each will need to compensate a given concept similar to classic characters games. All players get different materials with which they have to represent a picture from a display. The players each receive points for guessing terms that other players have reproduced as well as for recognizing their representations.

The game material from Pictures consists of the game instructions:

  • 91 photo cards,
  • 48 photo selection tiles with letter and number designations from A1 to D4,
  • 5 sets of materials and one Pictures emblem each, including
    • a set of 6 different building blocks,
    • a set of two shoelaces of different lengths,
    • a set of 4 wooden sticks and 4 stones,
    • a set of 19 symbol cards, and
    • a set of 24 color cubes and a picture frame,
  • 4 oval letters and number plates each,
  • a cloth bag, and
  • a pad of paper.

Style of play

In preparation, a grid of four by four fields is laid out of the oval letters and number cards, in which 16 cards from the mixed pile of photo cards are laid out. Each player receives a piece of paper from the paper pad, a writing tool and a random set of materials. The 48 photo selection tiles are placed in the cloth bag and mixed well, then each player draws a tile.

The tile drawn indicates which photo from the display must be reproduced by the respective player. All players now try to simulate the relevant images with their material set at the same time, the Pictures emblem is used to mark the bottom. After all players have finished, all players look at the pictures of their fellow players and guess which of the pictures could have served as a model and write this on their pieces of paper. If all players have given their tips for all opponents, an evaluation takes place in which each player names which pictures he believes have been reproduced. For each correct combination, both the guessing party and the performer receive a point, which is noted on the piece of paper.

When all tips have been settled, the next round begins and all materials move on by one person. If there are fewer than 5 players, a set of materials is removed from the round and replaced with another set. A total of five rounds are played, so that each player had to work with each set of materials once. The game ends after the betting results for the fifth round, the winner is the player with the highest total number of points.

Versions and reception

The game Pictures was developed by the game designer couple Christian and Daniela Stöhr and published in 2019 by the publisher PD-Spiele in a German / English version. In 2020 the game was also published in English by the American publisher Rio Grande Games and in Hungarian by Gém Klub Kft.

In 2020 it was nominated together with the games My City and Nova Luna for the award as Game of the Year and was able to prevail against them.

The game critic Harald Schrapers wrote about the game: “Whether in small or large groups with up to five people - Pictures works in different combinations.” In his opinion, Pictures is “a lively experience, entertaining and quickly played through.” Udo Bartsch rates the game with his 5-star rating "attractive" He sums it up

“The basic idea of recreating something and guessing it is not entirely new. The use of inadequate materials, because they were intentionally reduced, has also existed. PICTURES is still gaining something new from the genre. The fact that everyone first forms and then guesses at the same time creates a nice flow of the game. The forced exchange of materials prevents habituation and somewhat balances the skills of those involved. If you can't handle the laces at all, you might be talented with color dice. PICTURES appeals to different senses and combines handwork, creativity and intellect in a harmonious, pleasant and above all playful way. "
