Game of the Year 1981: Shortlist |
Sagaland is a board game from the game publisher Ravensburger for 2 to 6 players, ages 6+ . It comes from the authors Michel Matschoss and Alex Randolph . It won the Game of the Year award in 1982 and has sold over 3 million copies since then. In 2011 a new edition was published by Ravensburger with the new game variant "Gute Fee".
material
In addition to the game plan, the game, which has now been released in slightly different designs, also contains:
- 13 trees (plus 13 discs)
- 13 question cards
- 6 pawns and
- 2 dice
- 1 character "Good Fairy" (in the 2011 edition)
regulate
Sagaland is a mixture of memory and people don't get angry . A village (start), a castle (destination) and a fairytale forest are shown on the game board. In this are the fir trees , on the underside of which a fairy tale symbol is depicted, e.g. B. Cinderella's shoes or the ball from the frog prince . The other players try to track down the Christmas tree with the fairy tale that is currently on the pile of cards in the castle. To do this, the players in turn roll two dice and move through the fairytale forest or to the castle. The players can throw out the pieces of other players . When a player reaches a tree, he alone looks at the bottom. If it is the fairy tale he is looking for, the player moves to the castle and tries to reach the key field there. If he succeeds, he has to name the correct tree and then receives the corresponding fairy tale card. If there is another fairy tale under the tree, the player tries to remember the symbol he has seen for the rest of the game and also to conquer this fairy tale card as soon as it is revealed. If the active player rolls a double, he can also perform one of the following actions in addition to his normal moves:
- Drag your pawn to any tree space and look at the object there.
- Move your pawn to the space with the castle bridge.
- Shuffle all the questions in the deck and randomly reveal a new card.
If a player has been able to conquer three fairy tale cards, he is the winner. A game lasts around 30 to 45 minutes.
In the 30th anniversary edition, the new variation “Good Fairy” has been introduced for the basic game. If you roll a 7, you get the “fairy godmother” and can make another move. In addition, the fairy protects the player and he may not be sent back to the village.
assessment
The game can be played by children and adults alike, as younger players do not have to experience any disadvantages due to the proven advantage of memory games. The success of the family game can be seen not least in the more than 30 years of the game in the publisher's repertoire. In English-speaking countries, it appeared in 1982 under the name Enchanted Forest .
variants
Ravensburger has since released further variants of Sagaland: In addition to the licensed products “Disney Rapunzel - Sagaland” (2010), “Sagaland Filly® Butterfly ™” (2014) and “Wickie Sagaland” (2016), it was also released in 2011 as part of the Ravensburger bring-along game series “Sagaland - The Bringing Game”. In addition to a changed game plan, all variants are characterized by a reduced scope of play:
- 7 trees (plus 7 discs)
- 7 question cards
- 4 characters or 5 in the "Sagaland Filly® Butterfly ™" variant and
- 2 dice
As a result of the reduced scope of play, the specified playing time is also reduced to 15 to 30 minutes.
Other meanings
There are also a number of game books called Sagaland . However, apart from the same name, these have nothing in common with the Sagaland listed here.
