Sherlock Holmes Criminal-Cabinet is a detective game without dice and game board, but with a number of documents (city map and various notebooks). The deduction game can be played as a solo or group game.

overview

The game developed by Gary Grady, Raymond Edwards and Suzanne Goldberg was released in 1981/82 in the USA by Sleuth Publications as Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective . Revised new editions were published in 2011 by the French publisher Ystari Games and in 2016 by Space Cowboys . In Germany it was published in 1984 by Franckh-Kosmos and in 2020 by Asmodee . In the old German edition, Anthony Uruburu is given as the author .

The American games magazine Games Magazine named the game one of the best games of the year in 1982; it received the Charles S. Roberts Award ( Origins Award ) for the best fantasy board game in 1982. In 1985 it was awarded the Game of the Year Critics' Prize in Germany . In 2011, Ystari Games brought out a French edition, which was awarded the As d'Or - Jeu de l'Année “Prix du Jury” in France in 2012 .

It is the task of the players to solve ten crimes in the Victorian London of Sherlock Holmes .

equipment

All kinds of aids are available for solving the crimes, either as individuals or as a group. There is a newspaper archive with articles from the London Times to be studied for clues. An address book gives the place of residence of any people to be questioned, which can then be found in the interrogation book . A city map helps to put the locations into context. A solution book confirms the investigations made.

additions

Franckh-Kosmos published two sequels in Germany. In 1986, Sherlock Holmes Tatort London was a sequel with five other cases that can be played independently. In the same year, Sherlock Holmes The Queen's Park Affaire came out, which contains only one case, but has a slightly different game concept that emphasizes the time factor in the investigation. While the first two titles are still used relatively often today, the Queen's Park Affaire is rarely found. For the new edition of Asmodee, the case disappeared in Hyde Park appeared in 2020 .

There are other titles from the series in other countries; 1988: Adventures by Gaslight, 1995: West End Adventures and 2020: The Baker Street Irregulars. An expanded version of West End Adventures was released in 2016 that includes a new case about Jack the Ripper .

In addition, a few shorter extensions appeared, each consisting of only a single case; 2012: La rancon du diable, 2013: Les Masques Africains, 2014: L'Homme Sans Visage and 2020: An Irregular Meeting.

computer game

In 1991, Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective, a PC implementation of the board game template in the form of an interactive film adventure, was released. By 1993, two sequels, Vol. II and Vol. III, were released, resulting in a total of nine cases being implemented digitally. A new edition of the adventure is currently planned.
