White Castle (Dresden-Cossebaude)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A former factory owner's villa in Cossebaude in the west of Dresden is known colloquially as the White Castle . It is located at Gnomenstieg 4 away from the rest of the buildings in Cossebauder Park , elevated at the transition from the Elbe valley to the Meißner highlands. It is unique in its shape and a landmark of Cossebaude that can be seen from afar.

A good 250 meters to the west behind the villa, which is protected as a cultural monument, is the red beech in the park behind the White Castle , one of the mightiest red beeches in Saxony.

history

The villa was built in the late 19th century in neo-Gothic Tudor style, dating from 1890 to 1898–1907.

A prominent resident in the 1920s was the entrepreneur Hugo Zietz , owner of the Dresden "tobacco mosque" Yenidze . After the Second World War, the historical floor plan was changed when smaller apartments were furnished through renovations. Part of the historic interior was also lost.

After the last tenants moved out, the villa was auctioned in November 2004, by which time some reconstructions had already taken place. This was followed by extensive renovation with conversion to high-quality living space.

description

The listed villa is a picturesque, castle-like building with three crenellated towers, the tallest of which towers over the entire property like a keep. Next to the villa is a terrace with partially preserved battlements. The building with a two-storey living area is enlivened by decorative trusses, support struts and bay windows. Inside there is stucco decor in the hall and five other rooms.

The White Castle is a characteristic example of romantic historicism . The Eckberg Castle in Dresden and the remains of the abandoned Old Franconia Castle still bear witness to this style, which revived the medieval castle architecture .
